This is probobly a stupid question.
But what do you bath a newborn baby with?
Iv gone and bought Jhonsons no tears baby shampoo & also Jhonsons baby bath stuff, I think its like bath foam stuff but for babys.
I thought you just wash them with that, put the flannel in the water and wash them like that.
But my freidns told me you need proper soap for babys?

i have always used johnsons on both mine and thats what the nurses used in hospital

Ive always used Johnsons Top To Toe wash on my son and thats more than adequate!

Your midwife should help you out with this when your lil boy is born but initially plain water is fine, and only topping and tailing is really necessary for the first week or so. I was always told cooled boiled water for the baby's eyes using a fresh piece of cotton wool for each eye wiping from one corner to the other whilst baby is wrapped in a towel. Then clean hands, skin folds and bottom with warm water after. I was shown how to bath both my boys whilst still in hospital. I remember I couldn't wait to use baby bath but discovered one of my boys had eczema so couldn't use any soap anyway.

You'll love bathing your baby for the first time its just lovely, although a bit slippery when using baby bath!

I never ever used talc on my lad either until he was well over a year old! Didnt even buy a bottle of it (only for me ) :rotfl:

Hi Jazz

Johnsons stuff will be fine, but you dont really need anything special for the first couple of weeks. If you are going to bath baby and use something like that, i would suggest getting a baby sponge rather than a flannel as it will be a lot gentler on babies skin. Cotton wool would do to begin with too

Oh and congrats on team blue by the way. I noticed your other post but dont think i replied to it!

:cheer: Thanks huni!
So after a few weeks then what do you use?
Sorry for all the questions.

i use a balneum bath oil on my boyo as the dr said that sometimes products can dry your little ones skin out so i don't use much on him. ours has a touch of ezcema so needs to be kept very moisturised!!
edit to add that the johnstons top to toe wash seems to be fairly good and not to perfumed. i use this on his hair and over his body

Hi, as other people have said Ive always used just water for the first few baths for all the children Ive nannied for, they really dont need anything extra. Even after that they dont really get dirty until you start weaning or they start moving about, before then its only if they're sick or their nappies explode that they need anything extra

I would say what you use is down to personal preference after that, most baby things are very gentle on the skin anyway. I dont like Johnsons stuff myself as for some reason Ive never liked the smell, god knows why! In my current job I use Tescos own or Boots own ranges and they're fine. Just use a tiny amount of whatever you choose and you'll be fine :)

And Id really recommend a baby bath seat, one of the soft ones for newborns, it makes it soooo much easier as tiny babies are slippery when they're wet! It also leaves your hands free a bit more so you dont get in such a muddle with holding and washing them at the same time!

I used the baby bath in the water then just washed my girls with the soapy water and a sponge. When they got a little older i used johnson baby powder or top to toe wash.

Can i just add that (wih Olivia) i didnt always buy johnson, i used to buy the asda own brand or Boots own stuff, its not only cheaper but just as good.

I will proably use the same this time.

use whatever u feel is best for ur baby (of course a baby product) and if it didn't suit him u can switch to a medical one after asking ur MW.
I used johnsons for my son but it didn't suit him so I used a medical soap and shampoo...

Don't worry about bathing.. if you haven't alreadyby now, you will get loads of leaflets and handy books from the hospital or midwife explaining how to do these things. I found it all so so helpful with my first born. I didn't have a clue what to do.. but the nurses at the hospital showed me.. and all the books and information guides took me through everything step-by-step. Hoorah, we're no longer expected to work things out on our own! :cheer:

What you already have to bath baby is fine. He will be fine with cooled boiled water for the first few weeks, as someone else said (get yourself and top and tail bowl and fix the water in that as opposed to a whole bath-full of cooled-boiled water) and get some cotton wool balls to use.. that's all you'll need initially. When you start bathing baby and using products.. you'll just need a really soft baby sponge or something similar, anything that is kind to soft skin (Johnson's is the best brand I know!)... and don't forget a bath thermometer (some women prefer to use their elbows to test the water but I've always gone for a bath thermometer for extra safety).. sounds complicated but it'll all come naturally when it comes to it. Continue topping and tailing after bath though.. baby still needs those little bits properly rinsed and his face clean and gorgeous smelling!! :D
