although all the standard advice out there at the moment states that babies should always be put to sleep on their backs, i have been hearing conflicting advice from mums i know. most mums i speak to advise on alternating the position you put your baby to sleep for two reasons; 1. it stops them getting a flat head at the back (i have seen babies with this to be fair) and 2. to stop them potentially chocking on their own vomit. Naturally the second one has put the wind up me. Would like to hear what position you put your babies to sleep??

When Colby was born he had inhaled some merconium so when we were still in hospital the mw's put him on his side in the cot with a towel supporting his back, so that he could get rid of all the mucus from his lungs. This was so that he didn't choke on it if he was on his back. So he quite likes being on his side

Colby alternates himself between his back and side. If he's in his moses basket (through the day) he lies on his back at the bottom of the basket and if he is in our bed (sometimes at night as easier with feeding) he starts on his back and then turns onto his side.

As they get bigger you won't have much control over how they sleep as they will be able to turn themselves over. HTH :)

Arthur sleeps on his tummy. I have to put him down like this or he does nor sleep. He can't roll himself yet.

we put our Lo on his tum from 7 weeks, he would not stay asleep fo rlonger than 20 mins if any other way, we had sensor pad so that helped with reassurance.

If they sleep on back i would just put them on back, never heard about the sick thing bu that is very worrying. We had a special anti flat head cushion which was a little red heart with a kinda hole in it ( I was worried about flat head, a lot!!!) it is a french make we bought online

Tegan slept on her back but as soon as she could roll she would sleep on her tummy or side x

my lo slept on his side when he was a newborn,he was born abroad and this is the position that they advised us... but now he is a tummy sleeper!!!

Your baby will probably have a fave n let you know. We used to put L on her back but it became apparent she preferred to be on her side, and she learned very quickly how to roll onto her side. She has a lovely shaped head too :D

If your baby has reflux and you are worried about him choking, then put a pillow under the head end of his cot (Or a folded towl under the matreess in his moses basket) This will put him on an angle so he wont choke but he can still lay on his back as is considered safe...

That said... Lanna always slept on her side (While in the bedroom with me), then her face once she could roll over LOL she likes sleeping on her face and knees! I didnt move her to her own room till she could roll over.

Oscar will sleep on his back now, but hated it when he was newborn coz he used to choke on his saliva and it was distressing for him and me so he would only settle on either side. He still prefers side sleeping now, but will roll over onto his back in his sleep now and it doesn't wake him. He always goes to sleep on his side though.

Swaddled as tight as possible and on her side until she was 3 months (ish) as I used to put her down awake and stay with her patting her back until she fell asleep at bedtime :)
Now she is in sleeping bags she sleeps on her front x
