So LO & DH are snoozing, I'll use the opportunity to do my birth story which, I'm happy to say, wasn't traumatic!
As some of you know due to recent events, I was anxious about when I'd exactly go into labour. MW attempted a sweep on my due date & cervix was closed but thin. She left me with some tips (scrubbing floors, etc) but due to spd all I could really do comfortably was bounce on the ball or walk which I did plenty of in the next few days.
On the 25th around 3.30pm I started getting what I assumed to be either strong BH or contractions. I took paracetamol which did nothing & took a hot bath which helped a little. Texted DH as I knew he had a meeting informing him not to panic & that I thought I'd gone into labour. Asked him not to be late home from work.
Started using my app to record contractions. They were quite irregular but frequent at the same time (if that makes sense) - for the most they were coming around every 3mins & lasting around 30 seconds but every so often I'd go 5-10mims without one.
When DH arrived home, he ran me another bath & afterwards we put the TENs machine to use. DH had a mess & nearly wound up with a slap!!
I rang labour ward when contractions regulated a bit...Sod's law on the phone I didn't have one during the entire conversation with the MW! Was advised the usual; ring back if they get more frequent, more severe, waters broke, bleeding etc. rang back shortly after because of some bleeding but was advised it sounded like more or my plug.
About 10mins later (about 8.50pm) I felt a pop inside & which made me 'ouch'. Told DH who pointed out it was probably my waters which I confirmed by standing up. Rang labour ward again & was advised to have some tea & toast & make my way to the hospital. I managed a slice & a few sips & that was it.
Contractions got more painful during the journey...the pain being more around my back so they have me some paracetamol & codeine (did nothing) & offered me sterile water injections. They stung like a b**ch but were very effective.
MW managed to examine me but couldn't tell if my waters had gone & said I was already 5-6cm dilated. This made me feel positive as my aim was to stay at home for as long as possible!
They led me to the delivery suite (small box room!) - I wanted the birthing pool but the room (not the pool) was in use. Gutted but couldn't be helped. I was given gas & air & was offered diamorphine when the pains started again which I accepted. Gas & air did nothing for me but diamorphine was brilliant
By 1am the diamorphine has begun to wear off - I couldn't have no more & I was exhausted. I practically begged for an epidural (at this point I was 7-8cm dilated). This was the worst part of labour because I had to wait for the anaesthetist who was dealing with emergencies elsewhere in the hospital! This took about 4 hours!!! I was in agony & the poor MW had to constantly go check on the whereabouts of the anaesthetist.
He finally got there & hooked me up. Don't remember anything apart from relief as soon as the epidural kicked in. I could still move my legs a little & I could still feel the pressure from the contractions. MW examined me & she said there was a tiny bit of cervix left. They decided to leave me to get some rest & to allow the baby to move down which he didn't do so I had I have the drip to help.
When it finally came to the pushing part, LO's heartbeat began to drop so they called a doctor in to assist with delivery. They tried to use the ventouse but it wasn't working so used a kiwi (small manual suction). A few pushes & LO was crowning! I've got the MW & doctor telling me not to panic & I'm shouting back that I wasn't panicking they just had to tell me what to do. A few pants and the head was out & the body followed with a push on the next contraction!
I had normal blood loss & a 2nd degree tear which the doctor stitched up in no time.
I can honestly say it's true that they say you forget the pains instantly when you LO is handed to you! I'm sure I would be saying the same thing if I'd managed without the epidural.
Now all I have to deal with is the healing of the tear & after pains.
SO HAPPY & IN LOVE
