So my LO had latching problems when i was in hospital, then had urates form getting nothing so i endend up having to start formula and i didn't really get much support help feeding him considering how much they drill BF into your head. He's been on aptamil and i have been expressing a couple of times a day and he has one expressed feed a day.

Im really starting to feel guilty about not being ble to BF, ive tried him on the breast a few times and he just thrashes his head around and starts crying.

Do you think a nipple shield might help or am i just being stupid to think i might be able to BF after 3 weeks?

:(

It can be possible all you can do is try. A shield might help initially with the latch. it may take some work and topping up id contact your local bf group but all you can do is try!

A nipple shield might help, i found squeezing a bit out of the nipple in to the shield helps promote baby to suck, as your nipple needs to mould in to the shield and baby can get frustrated sucking and not getting anything. But it does help.

I'm really impressed you trying so hard, and all you can do is attempt! :) x
GOOD LUCK x

I remember a friend saying she bottle fed her baby for 3 weeks and was in the bath one night when baby started crying she got him in the bath with her and he rooted until he found her breast and successfully fed him for a year :) x

With lots and lots of skin to skin and patience it can be possible...
Any local bfax support might be able to give you info. Failing this la leche league might be good to talk to x

I've heard people who express being able to return to BF after 6 months!

Try him on your normal breast when he wakes up hungry in the night because this is the time they're most likely to blindly route for something and start sucking on it.

Is he routing around like he can't find your nipple?? G did that and we fed with shields for 4months before she got the hang of natural latching.

It's prob worth a try as the shields can give your nipple a more "bottle" shape iykwim, so might be easier for him. Xxx

On my iPhone - so cant see tickers :(

this is true, and like i said, tasing a bit of milk in to the shield before they latch helps them smell it and feel less frustrated.

HTH. xx
