Anyone have an asthma attack during labour?

I have allergic asthma and am concerned about the hospital environment setting it off (too many cleaning chemicals etc). I know asthma attacks during labour are unusual because of the adrenaline etc but was wondering if anyone has experienced an attack during labour, what was it like, and how did they treat it?

Cant really answer your question but didnt want to read and run.

Try no to worry sbout it too much. Hoprfully you'll be ok. I'm asthmatic and my asthma was controlled during labour. Hoping it'll be the same this time round too.

Maybe speak to your MW and see what she says about it.

Thanks, yeh, I'm hoping for the best. The problem is my asthma is not well controlled and although I'm okay at home it get's set off easily by perfumes cleaning products etc in public places. I'll talk to the doctor about it and my OH will be blocking anyone wearing perfume at the door, lol.

With my first, a hospital birth, I was told to be sure to bring my inhaler in case I needed it. An asthma attack is nothing to ignore.

You can mention it to the hospital who will give you a sterile room for allergies xx

It is awkward to explain because my triggers are a little unusual. Even the sheets that have been washed in detergent are a problem for me. My experience in the past is that doctors don't really believe me until they actually see me have an attack.

It's not like I've not tried, and will continue to do so but it's no use being too forceful because they just decide you are crazy and then don't listen to anything you say :). We think we are going to go with a private hospital because we will be able to demand what we want a bit better there.

I have been looking into that but I haven't found a MW or doctor in my area that will attend a home birth yet. I live in Portugal and it is not common here.

Yes, but I live in Portugal now, my husband is Portuguese.

Would u consider returning hone for the baby? Also what about hiring a private midwife for delivery xx

Going back to UK did cross my mind but I think the whole think would be more stressful and expensive than it was worth. We would have to go by car because I can not travel on a plane (too many people wearing perfume in a closed space) and it would be difficult for my husbands work. You can't get home births through the state here so we are still looking for a private MW but there are not many of them.
