Anyone else really daunted by the idea of giving up alcohol to conceive/in pregnancy?

I've had 2 miscarriages so this time round I'm going to give up all coffee and alcohol :x I know most people don't have to give up everything to carry to term but I must have a rubbish system or something that has twice m/c'd so I'm going to try everything.

Anyway I only drink a couple of pints about twice a week, but find that I do look forward to and like to have a drink at least once a week. (last pregnancy I only had one half a week- but this time don't want to risk it at all.)

Anyone else giving up and a bit daunted by it?

Hi, I really know I should but haven't and don't expect I will until I know that I am pregnant.
I don't drink masses at the moment (a couple of glasses of wine a 2/3 nights a week plus a wine splurge when I get together with the girls) and I am sure some people will think it is really irresponsible but it helps me relax, I do enjoy having a drink and as much as I want a baby I don't want to give everything that I enjoy up in the process (I still love and drink far too much coffee too  ).

I also know that deep down in my heart of hearts that I will really miss alcohol when I get pregnant however I have discovered that in Asda you can buy an alcohol free wine called Fre which is delicious.
Crikey I sound like a total lush!!

Trigger.
xx

oooooooooooh I'll try the fre wine :)

I know what you mean though, 9 months sounds like a long time

i gave up alcohol when i started TTC but after a few months gave up, but i wouldnt drink anything while i know im pregnant. Its only a few months and its best for the baby and thats the most important thing in the world. :D

A friend of mine had this problem when she was trying to lose weight but she found it was partly habit and if she put apple or grape juice or even fizzy water in a wine glass, the fact that she had a glass in her hand really helped and she said it didnt actually matter much that there was no alcohol! :D

Don't know if this might help!

I gave up completely apart from a drink when AF showed her head. This month tho I haven't been as strict and I've been out this weekend, but I don't ov until Wednesday so I won't drink again this month at all.

Last time I was pregnant, I drank until I found out which was the end of first tri - but the moment I found out I didn't drink at all. I'm not worried about giving up this time, I regularly do 6 months of not drinking and did 12 when I was trying to lose weight (which I could do with again now  )

I've been trying to avoid drinking in the 2ww, though I wouldn't not drink on a night out (which happen very rarely), just drink less than usual.
I've just started a diet so I'll be drinking even less. Will save on calories by not drinking at home in front of the telly! Only vodka and diet coke when I go out.

I gave up alcohol about 5 years ago and i think in all that time i have had maybe 3 drinks! I'm so proud of myself! (had to give up due to a dodgy heart)

Anyway this week i have discovered Pineapple and lime juice and i seem to be addicted to that. Reminds me of the good old days when i used to drink malbu and pineapple - yummy!

I used to be a medium-heavy drinker, never had a problem just liked a drink and would have a small drink every night, heavier if I was socialising. Since TTC I only have a drink when AF shows, same as libs, as it feels like a safe time. It gives me some kind of consolation that AF has shown up too, and means that its easier not to drink for the rest of the month.

I've sort of given up...... Only had one glass of wine this weekend which is my first drink in over three weeks.

I will have a splurge when AF shows but as soon as I conceive I'll be stopping completely until baby is here.

I have given up caffiene for over a year now...I feel 100 times better, so I don't miss it, especially with all the decaffienated drinks you can get now.

My alcohol consumption has lowered considerably now. I might have literally 1 or 2 glasses of wine a month.

I am not daunted, I would give up anything just to be able to hold my own baby.

I don't drink very much anyway. I didn't drink in the 2WW up until last month when I tried to relax a bit and not let TTC hold up my life IYKWIM. The other month I was even to worried to dye my hair!!!

I'm going to relax now and if I want a drink then I will. I've not given anything else up either. I think that if you concentrate to much on TTC and give up everything you think would harm you or a baby then you'd just end up sat in a chair afraid to move LOL. Of course when I get my BFP I'll not drink etc but until then I will have the odd drink. TBH I've not had an alcholic drink in a couple of weeks anyway so it doesn't really affect me.

I'm sure our parents and granparents never gave up everything and we turned out just fine.

Hi guys

I am so glad we have had a post about this... I have been in a real quandry as to drink or not to drink.

I like red wine 1 glass with a meal, every night and then a few more if going out 3-4 glasses with food, I dont drink spirits at all...

This month I really did not 'feel pregnant' so had a big splurge on sat night but now I have sore boobs (could be pmt) and an aversion to some foods, could just be me...so I am just waiting for AF to arrive, she is due Thursday, getting crampy now 4 days early though.

Could I be doing damage by drinking coffee n(1 cup a day) and tea (3-4 a day), I might switch to decaf but ghave been living in other peoples houses this month as house getting renovated (v stressful)

I have heard drink cant damamge a babdy until the placenta is formed, is this true ?
xxx

Hey Gemma!

I think it is probably best not to drink any caffiene at all whilst TTC or pg, especially if you've mc'd before. I don't know the ins and out, I just read that it can contribute to miscarriage, so I am not taking any unecessary risks.

As for placenta and alcohol etc...I think you're right. My sis didn't know she was pg last year and drank champagne like a fish on the Saturday night and got a BFP on the monday. She has a beautiful, healthy girl.

Good luck for Thursday honey! I am away for a few days now...can't wait to get back and see the outcome. I have everything crossed for you!

I once read that in the first couple of weeks, the baby really doesn't notice so much, this is because it is busy implanting itself. Hence a lot of ladies actually conceive while plastered!

After that, up to 8 weeks of pregnancy the embryo is really sensitive to any chemicals, drugs etc (which it gets by sharing a blood supply with its mum- it doesn't need a placenta to receive them.)

But it's a personal choice at the end of the day whether you allow yourself the odd drink when you are TTC/preggers.

As to decaff beverages, its easy to carry a decaff coffee or tea around with you no matter whose house you stay in.

Research has said the equivalent of 3/4 cups of coffee- moderate drinking- is fine. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1078716.stm :)

But I'm giving it up because of previous m/c's.

Hi guys
thanks for the advice, I went out and bought some decaf teabags, i was just caught out with having to stay at peoples houses as water off, electricity and we thought the house would still be livable- not..
i think next month for my own peace of mind I will cut out the caffeine and booze....just have the odd glass of red now and again...
i am sure i will feel lots better for it
xx

Its all very well saying you're going to cut down or give up alcohol and caffine, but how on earth do you get away with that when you've been a heavy binge drinker for years and you don't want to tell your friends you're a few weeks pregnant yet!? I am lying through my teeth left right and centre, faking illness etc to avoid having to drink or go out!
Anyone else have this problem til their first scan when you can tell everyone? :fib:

You can just tell people you are TTC so being good- or pretend u r on a diet, or even a recovering alkie :rotfl:

I'm still not feeling able to give up my cup of coffee first thing after I get up

Nope
I've given up drinking lots of times just to improve my health or weight or whatever. Just tell them binge drinking is bad for you so you're taking a break from it.
