... a very old christening gown? It's anywhere between 70-100 years old, perfectly gorgeous, but it's got a stain on the bodice (decades of babies possetting on it) and smells a bit... old! It's cotton and rather delicate looking lace, and I am scared to death of ruining it in the wash, do you think a dry cleaner's would know how to deal with it?

Any tips? I don't want Vincent's children to say 'we couldn't wear it because that old bat ruined it' LOL!

Sorry, not sure but some dry cleaners do wedding dresses which can also be very delicate. I had minwe dne. Maybe give them a call x

oh how beautiful, could you try washing it gently by hand and hanging it in the sun to dry? the sun always makes my whites whiter? and it does look like it might be sunny today?

Not the same but I hand washed my wedding dress in the bath with Dreft and left it in the sun to dry and that was lace.

Do a web search for Washing Vintage Christening Gowns. There's quite a few good hits with plenty of tips.

You would want to take it to a specialist cleaners it would fall apart easily if cleaned wrong . I have the same prob with my nanny s and that's what i was advised

I can only think of steam, do you have a steam generating iron?

Dry cleaners will not touch baby clothes hun. Dry cleaning fluid stays on the clothes and when warmed up with body heat stands a very good chance of killing LO. It causes sudden heart failure and there's no coming back. The amounts are small enough for adults to deal with but not tiny lungs. A lot of dry cleaners won't even launder baby clothes just in case a mistake is made and they come into contact with the fluid

Oooh, thank you, I had no idea!

I think this might be one for MIL, I am not putting my clumsy hands anywhere near that gorgeous thing, I know I'll somehow find a way to destroy it :oooo:

Is it ok to hold the baby having worn dry cleaned clothes?

Maybe you could go into a specialist cleaners and ask. Xxx

As far as I know that's fine, although wouldn't recommend it when baby's just been fed cos it could cost you a fortune lol

I'd be tempted to do it in the bath in filetti which is a powder just for babies.
