Jack is just over 8 months.... and he still chokes on lumps.

The slightest thing i.e banana, soft carrot, toast the lot he just tries to swallow it without even thinking of chewing! i couldn't give him a toast soldier in his hand and let him get on with it cos he shoves it all in, i have to break it into tiny pieces for him.

What do i do?..... HV just told me to let him learn from his mistakes and if he cokes give him water.

has he gone from totally smooth to finger food?

just wondered as i started to make alex's food less smooth - left a few more lumpy bits - not real lumps more just a different consistancy. then let the lumps get bigger. alex wouldnt touch any finger food to start with - looked at me like i was crazy! he loves it now though. i think some babies find the adjustment more difficult than others.

sorry if i am stating the obvious its just what worked for alex! :D

oh and i replied to your thread about amy's eating.

Cheers Em,

He has done to smooth to slightly lump to lumpy he just can't seem to get the hang of chewing so he doesn't choke, he can handle rice pudding, baby jars etc, lumps like that but he can't judge how much to break of and chew.

Hi Yvonne

Not sure if you've already tried this but what I did to help encourage Olivia to take finger foods was to take a soldier or rice cake etc then bite it myself and really exaggerate me chewing it - she was looking at me curiously so then I'd offer the food her and she wanted to grab it but I held it then she sucked it/bit a piece then I'd take another bit and exaggerate my chewing etc. She soon got the hang of it but I kept on doing it this way.

Don't get me wrong, she still gags on some stuff when she's just too lazy to chew it!

I think Rice cakes are great first finger foods because they soon break down so if they attempt to chew for a little bit they can swallow bits even if they're not totally chewed IYSWIM?
