Ok so I am expecting my first and I'm so scared as I have heard so many horror stories from friends and colleagues, I have to decide my birth plan but I actually don't no what to do the maternity just handed me a booklet and a form and just said to sign and bring bk. I just need someone to explain tdiscuss my options and to put my mind at ease.:)

I was very anxious too, ask your midwife if you can attend parenthood classes in your area, at these they talk you through the stages of labour and different pain relief options etc. Like you say its impossible to plan if you don't know your options. My advice though is to keep in your head that the reality might be very different from your plan, Id just look at that as a wish list for your perfect birth but don't be upset if it doesn't go that way, you'll be fine x

I did a hypnobirthing course before I had my first child. It really helped take away some of the anxiety and made me look at birth in a totally different way. I'd highly recommend it if it's on offer in your area. xx

That not a bad idea as I actually suffer from stress and anxiety anyway.

I'm having my second and can remember this feeling well! I watched tonnes of programmes about birth, do you have 'one born every minute' over there? We also went to the nhs parent craft class (it was all on one day, 4 hours or so) this was surprisingly good as we went on a tour of the labour wards where they showed us things they may use if necessary, forceps, suction cup (ventouse) etc.

Try googling birth plan templates or samples then you can look up anything you see on there that you don't understand and ask your Mw for more info.

If I could give you one piece of advice about labour it would be not to panic, stay in control of yourself and you will manage just fine. Breathe deeply and blow away the pain of contractions, your body was made to do this, trust it, it knows what to do! :-)

Xx

I stayed calm sbout birth by hsving the view thst the birth itself isn't important really... It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be successful.

My birth ended in c section but I still say it was a good birth... My son got here safe,y and that's all that matters. I think oeople get anxious because they want thus great experience, but it diesnt matter as long as bsby gets here safely and it will.

Thank you yes we have one born any minute but I'm afraid to watch it, thanks for your advice, I will do my best not to panic

I Googled birthing plans and read up on all the things that can occur in labour, my birth plan was initially to go with as little intervention as possible and be advised by the mw during delivery. I asked for all questions to be relayed via my husband incase I became distressed or irrational so that he kept my initial decisions at the forefront of his mind. Mw said my b plan was ideal as they knew what I wanted and also knew I was happy to be guided if plan a wasnt an option

The unknown can be very scary - especially for something that we already believe is going to be horrible and scary. I was always terrified of giving birth. But I learnt that we really do have the power to take control and there are methods for coping with any and all eventualities.

Basically I did hypnobirthing and I found it gave me tools that I could use for all the unpredictable things that childbirth throws up and such a calm confidence even when the birth sh1t got real! I was able to remain fairly calm and in control throughout, without panic setting in and making me feel massively out of control. I seriously recommend checking out the methods - we paid for classes but there are other resources available.
