Ok so here goes!
Sunday morning (16th Feb) at just before 5am I woke up with a slight backache and a desperate need to wee Nothing out of the ordinary! I had been experiencing this every night for the last few months so I thought nothing of it.
I got up, took a few steps into the hallway and suddenly my pyjama trousers were soaked through! Great, I thought, Ive wet myself!
So I cleaned up, went to get a new pair of pjs and it happened again! This time, my sleep deprived baby brain put 2 and 2 together! My waters had broken! I woke my husband up and told him. I then phoned the midwife led unit where I was planning to have my baby to let them know. They said not to worry as I hadnt had any contractions yet I would probably be a good few hours before anything happened. So I was to get a shower, something to eat and make my way in for a few checks at some point in the next hour or so.
My husband went to make breakfast while I took a shower I had hours to go so I thought didnt need to rush . Wrong.
The first contraction hit me in the shower and nearly floored me Okay, so things were starting, still no need to hurry these things take hours to progress right?
Wrong again!
5 minutes later, another contraction. So I rinsed off my hair and went to dry off and get changed.. I began getting more contractions and they were getting stronger.
By the time I made it downstairs the contractions were about 3 minutes apart.. I managed one bite of toast and a slurp of tea before another contraction hit I decided it was time to go to hospital.
On the way there, my contractions were coming every 2 minutes and I felt like I desperately needed a poo (sorry for TMI!!) I went completely rigid with every contraction and was almost sat in the footwell of the car by the time we arrived at hospital.
I made my way, painfully, to the top floor of the hospital where the midwife led unit was and they showed me into a room. The midwife in charge felt my stomach during the next contraction and said they werent very strong, even though they were so close together so she didnt think anything was happening yet, and since they didnt have the facilities to deal with any complications she didnt want to do an internal exam in case I wasnt dilated as it would increase my risk of infection and I would have to be transferred to another hospital.
She told us to wait a few minutes while she went to check my notes, but during this time I had another contraction and a very strong urge to push My husband rushed off to bring the midwife back.
She then informed me that according to my notes my iron levels were very low and I would be at a high risk if I lost too much blood because they werent equipped to stop the bleeding. So I would have to be transferred to another hospital anyway, so she agreed to do an internal exam to see what was happening.
So off came my clothes and she had a look, and all I heard was oh
I was 8cm dilated and progressing fast!
An ambulance and a paramedic were called but it was clear my son was going to arrive there and then! I was given gas and air and the first puff made me violently sick (my poor husband was unfortunately in the firing line )
Another contraction, and this time it was accompanied by another urge to push which I couldnt fight.. I pushed, the midwife checked me again, I was fully dilated and she could see my sons head already!
Less than a minute later, I got another contraction, another urge to push I was sucking on the gas and air as if my life depended on it! The paramedic arrived and put a drip thing into my arm to help if I had blood loss.
Another contraction, more urges to push.. My sons head was about ready to crown Then the ring of fire hit me (and boy does it deserve that name!!) I pushed hard as instructed by the midwife, biting down on the end of the gas and air nozzle to combat the increasing burning sensation down there. The contraction stopped so I took the opportunity to get a breath of something other than the gas and air before another contraction hit a few seconds later (my contractions by this time were less than a minute apart)
On the next contraction the midwife told me to push as hard as I could and pant in between pushes. I gritted my teeth on the gas and air nozzle and pushed, bellowing like a rabid hippo in between the panting The ring of fire burned more than ever and then with one last push it stopped.. the pressure subsided, the burning disappeared I had a few seconds rest while the midwives encouraged me for the next contraction His head was out, just his body was left to go now!
This time there was no pain, just a sensation of relief as the rest of his body appeared I felt relieved, the entire ordeal was over.. My baby boy was put onto my chest and my husband was offered to cut the cord (he declined) and I was given an injection to deliver the placenta (which arrived 4 minutes later according to my notes.. I have no recollection of what happened after my boy was given to me, I was just too busy being besotted by this gorgeous little boy)
This all felt like it took hours, when in fact my son was born at 7:27 am only 2 ½ hours after my waters broke.. The actual pushing stage was just 17 minutes! I managed to only need 2 stitches as well, despite the fact my body had not had much chance to adapt to the fact a baby would soon come flying out of there!
Oh, and my iron levels? I was tested again after the birth they were completely normal so there was no need to transfer me anyway, so after my baby and I were given the all clear, we set off back home!
So to all you ladies out there who are worried about the birth.. Yes, its painful, but you know what? Its completely worth it . Its true when people say that the second your baby is handed to you, you forget the pain. I can look back on the whole experience and say that, in a strange way, it was quite enjoyable, knowing that youve managed to overcome all that to produce a gorgeous healthy baby is something to be proud of!!
