Hello :)

Just wondering if everyone has been going to antenatal classes?

I haven't been to any, been reading alot of books and looking on internet at relaxation techniques etc..

My new midwife made me feel like I was stupid for not going and has insisted I start next week!

Is it necessary and beneficial??Just wodered what u guys think.

We did an NCT ante-natal course. It cost quite a bit of money but was so worth it. I made loads of friends. There were 10 of us on our course and we still meet every week and talk on the phone all the time. It was invaluable. I think the NHS ones are free so worth doing. You've got nothing to lose by going.

I was going to go but still not got round to it!

So ive been reading alot of books and any questions ive got I just ask my midwife.

I went to one but it was absolute rubbish, nothing I didnt already know. Probably depends where you go and whats covered :?

I attended NHS-run Parentcraft classes. I found them very informative, and that the information supplied was a lot easier to digest than reading from a book. It also gives you a chance to ask any questions that may crop up.

Na I didn't bother and it's a good job really because they wouldn't have been very useful where I'm going :?

I didn't have any offered to me but researched the Sure Starts in my area and they had on a breastfeeding workshop, labour workshop and baby basics workshop. I went to all 3 of those but I can honestly say, this forum and the book i bought - the Pregnancy Bible - have been more help. I knew more than the others there did.

We did NCT classes and found them really helpful. A lot of the stuff we already know but there was quite a bit we didn't know and found it very informative.

Plus I now have 4 more friends in the same boat as me and we met up last night and plan to do it every week if possible :D

Im in the middle of a course of 6 parentcraft classes and I find them really informative!!

Ive met alot of other mums and its nice to watch us all progress together.

I think it really depends on the area and what topics are covered.

Today we are going for a walk round tour of our maternity ward.

we didnt go to any, and to be honest my surgery were useless they never even told me about them ( didnt get my exemption through til he was 2 weeks old!) the midwife never even showed me the basics like breathing etc but when i went into labour you just know how to do it

When I said to people I was going to classes they all took the piss and did stupid labour breathing at me  But in NCT class, breathing was touched on a little bit but it was more factual stuff about different types of births and what can happen in labour and what your choices are and yes, what can be helpful to relax you and help you through the pain but it was more about giving you all the options to help decide exactly what kind of birth you wanted.

Our local GP surgery only offers one 4-hour class, so we are due to start a series of 8 NCT classes on 3rd Sept. I'm looking forward to them, but also to meeting other people around the same stage we are :D

We didn't get any lessons on breathing techniques either.
