So I had a visit from my health visitor this morning and I said about a burning I was getting in my left boob after feeding... She said it could be mastitis so should go to drs asap... She made me an appointment which I just had... Ended up being with the nurse who, because she had been a breastfeeding consultant, acted like Mrs know it all... "The health visitors have never breastfed, they know nothing about breastfeeding blablabla... You don't know about it until you've done it". And apparently it's normal, my body getting used to the milk coming in! So I'm meant to be screaming in pain when baby latches on am I? Meant to be kept awake at night after a feed because I feel like my boob is on fire? Grrr... Anyone here have any sensible advice? Or should I just "take paracetamol" under nurses orders? I always feel about 2 inches tall when I leave the doctors... She did however give me a prescription to use for when I do get mastitis (according to nurse ALL breastfeeds get it!)...

Could it be thrush? Does the nipple look pale? Have a pearlescent shine to it? Any white in baby's mouth? xx

No you shouldn't be screaming in pain or burning. I'm
With cos, sounds a hit like thrush. Any white spots on LOs mouth. You will both need treated if it is.

And she's talking rubbish, I bf for nearly a yr without mastitis.

Second opinion me thinks. Xxx

On my iPhone - so cant see tickers :(

I think I look normal... Haven't seen in his mouth though? How do I do that? Wait till he starts screaming and have a peek? The nurse examined me (well, pushed on the side of my boob) and said I was normal... Xxx

Boob feeling on fire isn't normal Hun. I got sore nipples and some pain on latching for the first week or so which I think is normal but intense pain like you're describing doesn't sound right. Does your boob feel hot? Is it red? Is it just the one that's causing problems? The nurse is definitely talking rubbish, I bf DS for two and a half years and never got mastitis! I'd get a second opinion if I were you Hun.

My baby is 5 weeks old now, the problem is only on one side... It's come on over the last week or so. It looks normal, no red, no lumps. Definitely not mastitis. She was a di#k though lol... Have I booked my 6 week appointment yet.. No... Have I registered my baby yet with gp... Not yet... Well you can't book your 6 week till you register baby and you have to get your smear done 6 months pp... I know... Grrr! I hardly leave the house! She should know all about this as she was quite keen to tell me she's already had 3 children! Xxx

It doesn't sound like mastitis hun.
It really does sound like thrush. When lo is asleep have a look inside the mouth or when screaming (or any opportunity you get!
You can have thrush and not have all of the signs iykwim but your symptoms do sound a lot like thrush.
With mastitis I had a temperature, red, hot and lumpy boobs. I felt like I had the flu.
With thrush I had the burning pain in one boob after a feed. It felt like a painful let down iykwim x

Dont have advice re mastitis or thrush as i never had it in 14 months i was BFing but wanted to say what a cow she is! Go to the docs to.get a second opinion

I've had thrush and mastitis.

Not sure I can relate a burning feeling to either.

My burning feeling was when my milk came in, or when my supply increased or when I was engorged.

Thrush to me felt like glass being sucked out of my nipples. Was extremely painful.

Mastitis was a blocked duct which to me was more sore than burning, boob got the classic red triangle, and it was combined with flu like feeling.

If you do take the antibiotics, try and take probiotic drinks to replenish good bacteria as that's a possible reason why I got thrush (got it after taking antibs for mastitis!)

Do you have a breastfeeding clinic? I would advise to go there. The thrush was diagnosed by them to me and they gave me a leaflet to show doctor which had details on what to prescribe! When I had mastitis, the doctor just took my word for it. I don't think they have a clue really.

Thanks for all the replies... Wasn't expecting this kind of response, was just ranting about the stooopid nurse lol.

Anyway... Will explain in full the symptoms:
1. When baby latches on I literally have to grit my teeth, left boob only.
2. Not too bad while baby is actually feeding.
3. 5 or so minutes after feed the left side of the left boob feels like it's burning then fades to an ache which fades out completely after some time, if it gets cold it aches again.

It's nothing to do with engorgement... That's a completely different feeling... Is not mastitis and I'm not going to take antibiotics unless I really have to...

Xxx

Is the nipple in tact? I had a hole in mine and when baby latched I literally wept :( xx

It all seems normal.... I just don't get it... I'll give it till the beginning of next week and if still no improvement I'll go back to see a doctor for a second opinion... Xxx

I agree that it doesnt sound luje mastitis. I was told if you have it you know you do, and by god I did! I woke up and felt like Id been hit by a train. I was aching all over, shivery, hot and cold, soaking the bed with night sweats, hysterical throughout feeds, red hot boobs, very red boobs, big red spots, and more.

And I happily took the antibiotics, it was agony. Worse than labour pains- I was asking for a boob epi!! X

I've had "mild" mastitis a couple of times but it really is like getting contractions in your boobs isn't it!

I've been lucky that's it's never been as severe as you've had it, I always seem to head it off early x

Please excuse any typos from my fat fingers!
Tapatalk madness!

It so is!! My MW said it wasnt severe though when she spoke to the GP!!! I think it bloody was!!! I couldnt even lift an arm or turn to the side as I cried so much cos of the pain! Never felt anything like it and Ive had 3rd degree burns!! X
