I woke up yesterday morning with loads of horrible blister like spots all over my body...so I went to see the doc suspecting chicken pox or something like that..

...but he reckons I've had an allergic reaction to something I've eaten. I can't think what it might be except that I had a prawn cocktail the night before (but I've had prawns before during this pregnancy)

Has anybody else had anything like this? The itching is driving me mental  I must look like I have fleas when I'm walking around!

You didn't happen to go out in the sun at all...???

I get the same thing if I go out in the sun... I get covered in blisters.

The only other time I've had something similar is when I had Impetigo, but it takes a while to come out.

It is possible to suddenly develop an allergic reaction to something, like prawn so I wouldn't rule it you.

Try camomile lotion and see if it goes in the next 24 hours. Drink plenty too as it flushes the toxins out.

If its something more serious than an allergic reaction it won't go...

oooh I have been in the sun recently. It was very hot in Devon and we've just been there on holiday. The spots are all over my back, legs, shoulders, hands, feet, arms and on my neck...so it's possible it could be the sun.

Thanks Squig x

t it when i go on holiday.. my face swells n everything .. calomine lotions great.. ask ur dr if u can take pirotine.. im sure u can take it after 16 weeks preg..

Noooo you can't take antihistamines of any kind.... sorry... We went to Finland for the summer and got savaged by mosquitoes as it was mosquito breeding season (literally, I had nearly 100 bites...) and everyone got to take piriton and I had to suffer through the itching.

If all the places you mention were exposed to the sun, then it is possible that it's sun related.... Sounds silly, but I even get it from sun beds. The one time I was silly enough to go only wearing knickers....and only the little bit covered by them didn't get covered in a rash.

The rash from the sun takes maybe two days to go as long as I don't re expose myself in that time. So if you still have the rash in a couple of days then you know you need to see your GP again...If he's not helpful go to the hospital.

my OH has an allergy to pine and pine saw dust. if he goes near it he comes out in blisters and some times his face swells up so bad.

if it happens again, keep a food diary and see if there is any pattern

Squig, were you told why you coudnt take antihistamine whilst pregnant?
I still take loratadine and was told it was fine. I've taken it everyday whilst pregnant.............what am i doing to my baby?

Dunno... but I was told by two nurses and a midwife not to touch antihistimines... well at least not the ones we had in Finland at the time.

it is possible that the brand you are taking is not considered harmful to a baby... or if it might be considered harmful, it might be that you are taking it for a condition that would prove more harmful, if you did not take it.

I take several meds that are considered "unsafe" during pregnancy, but the consequences of not taking it would be more dangerous. Also I was taking an anti sickness med, before I got pregnant called Motillium which is harmful to unborn babies, and was switched to another brand, pausadal... (my spellings terrible) which isn't harmful.

As Pilkers has seen her GP and he hasn't given her anything for the allergic reaction he has diagnosed, it is advisable that she doesn't go down to the chemist and by any antihistamines because in general they are considered harmful.

What I'm trying to say in a stupidly long way.. is for example Aspirin is dangerous to take in pregnancy right? So why do they say some women have to take it? Because their condition means the cons out weigh the pros. :) And although some meds are considered "harmful" its only because no trials have been done to prove they are safe. I'm pretty sure not many women would want to go and put their babies at risk all for the sake of medical advancement.

Regarding antihistamines:
Last time I was pregnant I got really bad hayfever and I asked the doctor and the pharmacist and I was told there was one kind I could take, I can't remember the kind it was, but you could always ring NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 and they'll know. :)

Urchin managed to explain it better than me... I'll shut up now.. :rotfl:

:rotfl: nah, you both helped squig!

I'll wait and ask the consultant if i ever get to see one  NHS direct never ring me back.
They were changed from another type after GP knew I was pregnant so i'm thinking it should be ok, they also cut my dose right down.....

thanks everyone... :D

with regards to antihistamines, my GP wouldn't prescribe them for me. He said that they haven't really been tested on pregnant women because the drugs companies are reluctant to do it in case they get sued. It's much the same for many medications I think.

I'm covering myself in some aqueous and calamine cream the doctor gave me but it's not stopping any new spots from coming up!!

This is just a thought out of the blue but my dad told me yesterday that a lot of doctors and patients etc have suddenly come out in a really bad rash etc, i dont know if its local to here (cheltenham) or widespread or even when its happened but recently i think and they have found its an allergic reaction to 2 leather suites Argos are selling, something to do with the type of leather used.

Just thought i'd mention this in case you have or know someone who has just bought any.

hope you start feeling better soon.

i read that in the paper at the wkend, it is leather sofas from Argos and a chain in the north that I can't remember (sorry). apparantly hundreds of people have come up in a rash in all the places that have come into contact with the leather.
