Hi everyone,

DH and I have now officially been ttc for a year and no luck so far. I know that now I have reached the year mark I can actually go to the doctors about it which is good because I am losing hope (although know some of you have been waiting a lot longer than I have).

I have pretty regular cycles (vary between 30-36 days) and based on temps I seem to be ovulating but no luck so far.

I just wanted a little advice on going to see the doctors and what will happen. Do they start with blood tests or really what happens? DH has a different doctors surgery so it would just be me going.

The other concern I have is that I am pretty overweight. I do have quite regular cycles so know my weight isn't affecting them and that women my size and larger have babies with weight not being a factor, but I have struggled with my weight all my life (I have never been slim) and I am just really worried the doctor is just going to tell me to go away and lose weight.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks x

Hi Trina,

Hubby and I were trying for just over a year when we went to GP, and like yourselves we have different GP's, so I went along explained and he referred us to our local NHS trust for fertility tests, we had bloods and hubby had an SA, I then had a dye test which looks at your tubes and then it went from there.

We found out that I am fine, regular periods, good bloods etc however hubby has low count and morphology which meant we had to be referred for IVF, however they wouldnt refer me because of my weight.

I am 5ft 5 and when I was referred i think I was about 88kgs and unfortunately for us my BMI was too high for our local trust guidelines as i was 32 and it had to be 30 or under before we could start any treatment.

Unfortunately we didnt have a good experience with NHS and have chosen to go private, some private places have slightly higher BMI limits like ours, however we have just had a failed IVF ICSI cycle and I believe I need to shift some more weight to help with egg quality x

Hope that helps x

Hi my and my OH first went to GP after ttc for 2 years. The first steps was blood test for me and SA for OH (two to be exact). All tests came back fine and so were referred to the fertility clinic. Had first appointment today where they did internal examination and an internal ultrasound of my womb. Again all were fine so now have to book in for a HSG.

Not sure whether your weight will be an issue but I have been told that my bmi is too low and that this will need to be increased before they can offer any assisted fertility treatment (for me this is easier said than done as I eat soo much as it is!). If I were you I would go along to your GP and see what they say, get the ball rolling. If they do suggest you loose weight explain the trouble you have, they may be able to help you. Good luck x

Thank you both for your help and replies.

I am sorry to hear your cycle failed Sarah and good luck with the hsg Poispinner.

I don't mind as much if they say I need to lose weight before fertility treatment, but I was just worried to were going to turn around and say they won't do anything (including any blood tests).

It was scary not knowing what will happen, but I feel better now and will go ahead and get hold of the doctor to get the ball rolling

xx
