I'm new to this site but desperately need some sensible advice. I'm 3 weeks pregnant (p.c.) and with a wonderful partner. I found at yesterday that I'm pregnant and am very happy about it but it wasn't planned and is awful timing. I'm going to Malaysia with work next week for a month. Working in KL is not a problem but have planned a 2 week trek in rainforest and climbing mount Kinibalu afterwards. each time I think i've got my head round one issue (like whether to take malarone (antimalarials) or not) another one crops up (is altitude bad for my baby - close to 13 500ft is the mountain we are climbing). I have wanted this holiday for soooooo long, been planning it in incredible detail and now I don't know if I'm being a selfish cow or worrying for nothing! Add in to the equation that I might just have to take some of it as I go anyway cos who knows how I'll be feeling at 6 weeks when I'm supposed to go up the mountain. advice anyone? please???

I'd speak to your GP, but I don't think there would be a problem xxx
I didn't start feeling sick/symptoms reallly badly until 8 or 9 weeks, so you might be ok on that front x
If you're physically fit, I don't see why it should affect baby xxx

The only thing might be if you have to get jags to go to malaysia and the anti malarials? Ask your doctors advice hun xx

Altitude should be ok as long as you're getting enough oxygen, though again I would speak to your doctor xx

I think altitude will possibly be an issue - Mt Kinibalu is a tough climb too with getting up before dawn for the last bit - but if you're fit and do lots of exercise anyway you should be fine - def check with your GP about the anti malaria tabs - you're not supposed to use any deet products either.... good luck x

Hi

First off.. congrats... Like the other girls have said defo check with your gp or a midwife would probably be better tbh.

I think the altitude might be a problem and for me also the sickness didn't kick in til I was about 7/8 weeks preggo.

xxx

thanks soo much girls, got appt with Gp on weds. been doing my reading and malarone should be safe. anyone got any experience with an antimosi agent called incognito, supposed to be all natural, very safe and no DEET? Or there are mosi repellent clothes which mean you don't have it directly on your skin. if anyone has ever tried them i loved to hear!

sounds amazing hun, im sure if ur gp clears it you will have a fab trip! x

Congratulations and welcome to the forum!

I went to Borneo last year and into the rainforest etc although most of our holiday was spent in the hotel as theres no way I could climb mount kinabalu! I didn't need malaria tablets when I went and didn't get bitten once - I'm usually covered in bites! We also didn't need any extra jabs although we had been to Sri Lanka the year before so had a few for there. The only thing I would say you need to be aware is the immense heat! I nearly passed out and had noses bleeds everytime we went in the rainforest so constantly had to fan myself and have loads of water as you sweat so much (sorry TMI and I wasn't pregnant at the time!). Its an amazing and beautiful place and so worth going we loved it! I would check with your GP on wed about the tablets etc

Hope you have an amazing time x x x

Hey just want to say congrats and welcome :)
Sorry but I cant give any advice!

so glad to have logged on here, especially in first trimester (and only 3 weeks in) when I can't share with anyone else. I'm so excited about this holiday and in some ways even more so now that my and partner have 2 weeks together to absorb and enjoy the idea of a baby! thank you all, and hopefully I can be an active part of this forum through my pregnancy xx

Sounds great, I'm quite jealous! I'm sure you be fine, your obviously fit to have planned this kind of trip. I would say just listen to your body while your there and don't over do it, you will find you can't do as much as you think, I've had a right shock as I'm a gym bunny and often find my workouts much harder than before, even in tri 1 I would go dizzy and be short of breath! Tri 1 can be very tiring even doing nothing, fingers crossed you won't get any morning sickness kick in, to help both eat little often to give you energy and prevent nausea. I always have an apple and cereal bar in my bag and carried a bottle of water everywhere in tri 1!

fab, thats great advice. did a 5 mile run yesterday and felt like it normally did, but I now this is early days and I could feel very different in a couple of weeks. We are open minded about it and I'll just let my OK carry on and do stuff. I'll definitely bear it all in mind, especially water and snack availability :)
