Addicted to forums - eg. Baby names

I seem to spend far too much of my time here, but there is another one as well

Its a baby name forum and although there is one here, I find you have to be really really nice on the PF one, but on the mumsnet one everyone is really honest about what they think. I waste hours there being really brutal about peoples names choices. I'm not sure what that says about me, but just thought I would share it with you guys in case you wanted to join the fun!

I know it sounds like a sales plug, but I promise its not, just good fun x

they really are. The funniest is when someone says "that name is totally chavtastic" then someone else says "my son is called that" and gets narky

Ha ha that's actually really funny .... Hmm maybe I shouldn't go on there then lol .... I am very particular with names don't like anything that sounds like a piece of fruit or something you would call your pet cat!!

I have a loathing of all the 'new' invented names, which seem to be seeping over from America and gaining popularity, I love being a big ol beatch about them lol

I suppose it's easy to be brutal when you're anonymous though I sometimes go on that YahooAsk if i want honest opinions on baby names because they are anon and therefore pretty brutal - best to know the worst

I just had a look at those forum and they didn't seem that different, just more numerous - many more people saying nice things than bad.

I say whatever i think in these forums too and i can't recall anyone doing anything more than disagreeing with me. There was that one time people jumped on you a bit in PF baby section - but i'm surprised it bothered you so much

I get shouted at lots of times I'd need about 10 different forums if i went and found one for every section on here that someone had a go lol

Ooooh may have to give this a go. I have so many rules in my head about what will/won't be a good name. But the main things for me are:

spell out the initials - make sure they are not associated with something especially in this world of abbreviations. Can you imagine if someone gave a kid the name Percy Oliver Andrew Smith!

Say the name aloud including the surname, and initial plus surname - will it sound stupid/wierd?

What can you shorten the name to?

Just things like that should really help to give a baby a suitable name that will minimise the amount of bullying. I really wish my parents had thought of some of these things!

I wouldnt worry to much hun ... my DH wants us to give our kids Greek names to keep with his dads heritage .. can just imagine going to play group to pick them up ... Zeus ... Hercules its time to go home!!!

My mum takes my little sis to a playgroup and there is always this one mum calling her child and his name is zebedee!? She needed to get herself onto a forum me thinks lol!

LOL, dont worry it didnt get to me, I just realised that maybe this forum isnt the place for brutal honesty, everyone here is very nice, which is great when you need a boost but I am terribly opinionated and its great to have a baby name forum where being totally honest seems to be appreciated rather than getting defensive (though yes sometimes they do, but I dont care about them, whereas lots of the people on here I am quite fond of and wouldnt want to hurt their feelings).

So I do avoid the PF babynames area now and use this one instead, I find it more fun to be a bit provocative Mwah ha ha!

It's quiet in here tonight. Are you all on the name forum? It seems bustling on there, but I've done them all now and I'm twiddling my thumbs trying to get inspired to work and can't seem to get going....

Maybe we should start our own brutally honest baby name thread in the ttc section. Could be a place where only total honest answers are allowed and if people are worried about having their feelings hurt they can post in the other baby name thread ....

It should be brutally honest anyway, otherwise theres no point asking for anyones opinion IMO x

Well, I would agree to that, and happy to go back to our own forum if that were true. I'll go and have a look at it later
