however, i disagree about the goldfish memory one.

goldfish swim near the top of the bowl if you pretend to sprinkle food in and start mouthing the water trying to find the food.

now, the three second memory theory would still hold true if they came to the top because they smelt food or felt it falling - so they would go to get it. 3 seconds later they would re-smell it or re-feel it, and so carry on looking for food.

but they do that, as i said, even if you don't put any food there. if you PRETEND to sprinkle food, they come up, and they still carry on looking for the food for several minutes after you've stopped pretending. i guess they reckon they have to search to find it or something.
how would that be possible if they had a 3 second memory? they would have forgotten that they saw you pretending to sprinkle it!

also, i had a goldfish, and he used to get really excited when he saw us. he'd start bouncing around and wagging his fins and tail - i swear that fish thought he was a dog.

besides, in general, fish have long memories. many fish (okay not specifically GOLDfish, but other fish) swim back for miles and miles to get to their place of birth in order to lay eggs in the same place they came from. marvellous memory!

My mum always made me eat fish to improve my memory! :D

lol yeh me too - she calls it brain food :p
