Hi Girls!
Went for my 24 week check-up today!

They had me a bit worried as every woman before me got called by a mw, but I got called by a doctor!

Turns out they have now received letters from my GP and Respiratory specialist (which they didn't have at my first visit!) and have now realised how bad my asthma is. In a way that's good as I'm getting extra scans!!!!!

Only because of the medication I take, which has never been proven to cause a problem in pregnancy at all. But they want to keep an eye on baba's growth........fine by me!! I love scans!!!

I should be allowed to delivery naturally! Yipeee! Although there will be a problem if I need induced as the drugs they use can cause an asthma attack, but they'll cross that bridge when they come to it!

That's great news! I'm really pleased. Bring on those scans! I'm sure Baby will be fine.

I've had a stressful evening (got some bad news re. work and I got really upset and worried) which set my asthma off. I'm just taking salbutamol (ventolin). That's okay isn't it?? What are you taking?

That's good news hun, at least they are keeping a close eye on you

Hi Ladybird!
Your salbutamol is fine to take. It's much better for baby to have a mummy that's breathing well and fully oxygenated than poorly!

If you think that you are needing to use salbutamol a lot to ease your symptoms then speak to your GP about going onto Salmeterol (Salbutamol, but in slow release) and a steriod inhaler (if you aren't already on one)!!

I went over my emergency plan medication with the Medical OBY which includes nebulizers, hydrocortisone injections and magnesium titrations. All of which they deemed safe. The only thing they didn't recommend was a salbutamol drip. But that's only because it can be used in pregnancy to stop contractions!

Hope this helps!

Hi Lainey, I'm glad they're taking extra care of you.

I have a question (I'm not able to talk properly when I'm with a doctor), are steroid tablets safe in pregnancy? This week I have been nebulised in A&E and again at my doctors, and they finally decided I needed to be on pred tablets for a while. They didn't seem very happy but said the benefit outweighs the risk. Do you know what the risk is? I'm also on serevent and lots of ventolin.

Enjoy those extra scans!!

Hi Hells!
As far as I am aware Steriod tablets (I take it you mean prednisilone?) are fine to take while pregnant. As you know, these are ghastly tablets and I sometimes feel that I'd rather wheeze than suffer the mutitude of side affects that are associated with them!

Try to keep your course as short as possible. If you have been on the usual 40mg (or 8 tabs) daily for only a week then you can just stop them without having to go through the reducing dose routine. Anything over a week and you should reduce them to let your body adjust to the falling levels of steroid. Of course, any worsening of symptoms and you may have to whack yourself back onto the pred. Please note that this is advice given to ME and may not be suitable for you. You should always check with your GP/Specialist.

I usually reduce my dose my 10mg daily. That way I can judge whether or not I need to stay on a higher dose for a day or 2, or whether I can reduce it again the next day.

I truely believe that baby will be much better of if Mum is well and breathing properly......the evidence of reduced sat levels (oxygen levels in the blood) and their effect on baby are much worse than any drug effect!

Make sure that your GP has updated your asthma medication recently.

Feel free to PM me with what you are on and I can have a quick check to see if it is up-to-date and if there is anything else I can tell you to suggest to your GP!!

Hope you are feeling better luv!
