Hi everyone,

Im new to this chat so i hope i'm doing it correctly! Ive recently found out i'm 8week pregnant and i'm really happy BUT i'm currently struggling to eat "healthy" foods.. i usually love my fruit and veg but all i can manage atm is junk food..and not much of it. I'm worried this will affect the baby but my MW told me its ok for now just to eat what i want. I was a very active gym goer and had a brill diet but now im really struggling. This is my 1st pregnancy so any info would be gladly appriciated! Xx

My advice may not be great as I have one miscarriage and expecting another currently BUT I have had the same issue in this pregnancy. I was also a very active person I trained 4-5 times a week and had a brilliantly balanced diet but as soon as I got pregnant I could only stomach junk food..mostly carbs. I think it’s normal and it’s not that big of a deal so early on. As long as your eating it should be fine

I’m exactly the same, before I found out I was pregnant I was completely vegan and really healthy, when I found out I was pregnant I returned to vegetarianism, now I completely crave junk food and the stuff that is really healthy I find repulsive! I made a lentil pasta thing the other day and i had to get rid of it because the smell and even the thought of it just made me gag. Where as previously I would have really enjoyed it. I think in the first trimester it’s moslty important to be eating, rather than what you eat. Obviously stay away from all those foods they advise against like unparturised dairy etc, but just eat what makes you feel good and what I’m doing is sort of forcing myself to eat my 5 a day, just the fruit I can stomach. Other than that I just eat what I can stomach (:

I had the same thing in my first trimester and my midwife also said that the most important thing was just to eat what I could and that I could catch up on nutrients later. I lived on carbs and junk during that time and now here I am at 40 weeks with absolutely no negative effect on baby. You will find your appetite for other things comes back and it’s lovely when it does! If you’re not taking a prenatal multivitamin then just make sure you’re taking folic acid and vitamin d supplements as they’re the most important in the early stages. Otherwise just eat what you can when you can xx

I'm the same too. I went right off vegetables, which was hard being vegetarian!! As long as you're taking a pregnancy multivitamin you should still be getting most of what you need. Just focus on keeping food down, even if it's just plain bread or crackers. It doesn't matter, your body takes the stored nutrients from your bones/muscles if baby isn't getting enough. When the sickness passes you can get back to eating properly.

I guess we've all been there

All I could think of during my first pregnancy was horseradish. This time I'm trying to eat healthier but it's not easy.

I heard that body knows instinctively which vitamins and nutrients your baby needs the most and it makes you want to eat certain things more. Do you think this is possible?

I was exactly the same! Went from a healthy lifestyle, working out, eating super healthy etc then as soon as I hit 8 weeks, bam. Couldn't work out and my body rejected anything healthy at all. I lived on plain biscuits, crisps and chips. Fatty carb overload and I felt horrific about it. I obviously planned on being as healthy as possible through pregnancy but my body had other ideas. I also had to eat constantly to keep the sickness at bay for work etc.
As long as your eating its fine, baby takes what it needs so if anything it would be your own body having a hard time about it rather than baby, and your prenatals will help with that anyway. Also in the second trimester I started to feel more normal again and could eat healthier as the sickness disappeared. Just ride out the first trimester however you can, its the hardest time, then it will get easier and you can get back on track so try not to worry about it :)
