Hi everyone-

I need to phone and book my appt for this tomorrow and still don't know whether to have the blood test or not. On one hand if I have it and it is ok that is great but if it comes back as a possible I really don't want an amnio and wouldn't want to get rid of the baby. I had thought I wouldn't bother but if I don't get it will I worry anyway about the result?

(I am a worry wart at the moment  )

I was just wondering whether you had/will have the blood test?

Yeah we plan to, just so that we can plan and prepare if theres a high chance of downs. x

We did. I din't have the test with my first, but on my last and this I think you have to think about the lives of everyone in your family and the impact that having a disabled child would have on them.

When it is just the two of you building a family around the needs of your baby are the most important thing in the world. When you already have children then you need to think about the lives of the babies you already have.

Not that the tests are conclusive, just an indication, but at least you have the chance to have further tests

i didnt with my son because that only affected me and my oh but i did with my daughter.

if u would have asked me 8 months ago id have sed if u was gonna keep bubs wot ever then dont have it but now id say have it just to prepare
the reason i say this is a very close friend of mine had her daughter 7 months ago and found out wen she was 4 days old she was down syndrome altho my friend loves her daughter to peices she has found it very hard to come to terms with the downs and she believes if she had had the test shed had longer to get used to the idea before her daughter arrived
but the end of the days its up to u

I had the test and got my results in this morning. It was the longest 2 weeks of my life so far. The waiting for the results is so stressful. We got a low chance result and we are on top of the world. It feels like a big weight has been lifted.

My advice to anyone would be do what ever you feel is right for you, but remember that the wait for the results can be a nightmare. xx

I had the test dine but werent worried about it, what will happen will happen.but i had the lowest rate going anyways.
It depends on age health etc.

i had the nucal fold test thing today and it measured fine 1mm.. so i probably dont need to blood test but i had it anyway.

I would always suggest getting the Downs test done, even if you didn't plan on having an abortion. If it comes back negative...great...if it comes back positive, you have time to prepare for your special baby. For most people it's a shock but having a Downs baby isn't a terrible thing...

Both my brother and sister have Downs (Adams on the left, Lucy is on the right). They both speak fluent Spanish and English, despite their problems (and there aren't many "normal" people that can say that) Lucy also translates for her deaf friends as she can also sign. Adam swims for Spain for the Special olympics and my sister is quite the proficient ballet/tap dancer, winning many trophies, medals and cups.

There are many services on offer for people with special needs babies, and the from when you find out you are expecting a baby like that you will have time to prepare for the arrival, accessing these services.

Downs people aren't as difficult to look after as people think as long as you treat them as normally as possible and force them to do as much as they can for themselves. They are quite intelligent and will play on their disabilities, if they think they can get out of doing the washing up or tidying their rooms, like everyone :rotfl: . They also encorage their siblings to be a lot less demanding and selfish, as well as being a lot more mature. For me, as a sibling, it was other peoples attitudes towards them that upset me the most, not actually having them. I never missed out on love, but I missed out on friends because most people are too narrow minded.

I am going to have the blood test done, but not to be on the look out for Downs but a more serious condition called Edwards Syndrome (or Trisomy 18 ) the most common form of Trisomy after Downs. Almost every baby will die before their first birthday, if they are ever born. My sister was born with this condition, and it terrifies me that I should ever have a child with the same condition. I know I carry a genetic marker for the condition as I was tested when I had Tia. I don't think I could watch another baby die from that condition and in that case I would have an abortion.

fothers my mw said to me straight out. put it this way if your baby had it would u get rid of it.

my answer was no.

she then said well u dont need the test then :D and that was that :)

it is up to you tho wether or not u go with this poll or not. do what u feel is best.you already said u wont get rid of baby so go with instincts :)

Thanks everyone

I think I will have the blood tests done for peace of mind if it is ok or to prepare otherwise. I really don't want an amnio though but I suppose we will cross that bridge when we come to it....

Sqiglet- thankyou for your reply- that was very helpful

Hi hun, I had the test done because my OH has 3 members of his family with genetic disorders, luckily it came back low risk :cheer:

There's no way I would have aborted if it had come back high risk, I merely wanted to be prepared.

I went for the blood test because I was curious to see what the results would be. I assume I wouldn't do anything if I had been high risk but I wasn't really worrying or thinking about it enough to be sure what I'd do.
Eventually the hospital rang me and told me that they hadn't received my blood sample in time to test and I would have to come back in in the next day or two to do it. I was on the train, heading out of town for 2 weeks, when I got the call so it was impossible to go back.
I think I would have liked to have gotten the results to be more prepared, whereas now I just assume everything is fine with my baby and rarely contemplate that there is anything wrong. When I actually think about it now, it'd be nice to know what my results would have been.

I decided to have the tests purely because it would give me and my husband time to prepare... having such a special baby would need some changes and we wanted to be able to have everything ready should that be the case.

G x.

That was my attitude hun xxx
