I had a the downs blood test done on Monday and they have called me back in today telling me that I am at high risk...I am going back to see them in 10 minutes. Has anyone else had this? I really don't want an amnio because I don't think I could terminate anyway. HELP!!!

ditto newbump - let us know how you get on....remember what they might class as high risk may not seem that high to you - i think high risk is under 1 in 250 if i remember correctly as in reality, that is quite low..

sorry i dont mean to sound patronising - i cant imagine how you must be feeling - hope it goes ok, crossing my fingers for you xxxxxxx

I havent had this experience, but my old boss did. she was advised her baby was at high risk, she is 33. he was born in june and is perfectly fine and no sign of down syndrome at all.

Hope this brings you some comfort.

This happened to friends of ours as well. They had the amnio and it all turned out fine and they now have a two year old lively little girl.

Wishing you all the best

I have just come back from the hospital where they have told me that I have a 1 in 210 chance of having a baby with downs....they only call you back if you are under 1 in 250. She said that there was more chance of having a miscarriage during the amnio procedure than have a downs baby. I have refused to have the amnio and just think that there is a slim chance of having a problem (under 0.5% risk). She also told me that the original blood test is only 60% accurate anyway so that means it could be wrong.......I can relax a bit I think after hearing this.....I was sooooo scared...

thank does souns a lot more positive - i think you were right not to have the amnio if the risk of miscarriage is so high. Really glad that you are more positive now i'm sure everything will be fine and in a few months you will have a healthy baby to run around after!!

xxxxxx

Thanks Jessika and other girls for replying,

My DH is cross because we always seem to be in a panic because of something (blood test RH- and now this downs information). He is not cross with me but he just thinks that too many tests are performed and years ago nobody would have known any risks etc and just got on with their pregnancies. He says he is afriad to open the post just in case we have more negative information!!!!

My DH gets stressed out at all the tests as well.

He was a nervous wreck before the first scan, a moderate wreck at the second scan and the blood tests I had for gestational diabetes just about finished him off, poor thing!

Men must feel so helpless in pregnancy and childbirth.

Julia - I just wanted to put your mind at rest a little if that is possible. I can't remember the exact figures as it was a while ago, but I was 22 when I was carrying my daughter, and I was in the high risk category as well. I also chose not to have the amnio. I had more problems as well, the placenta was holey, and I had to go for a doppler every 3 days from 32 weeks pg to make sure the blood flow was okay. I also had a scan every 10 days to measure her growth. I had very very low blood pressure and Borderline gestation diabetes. She was a very small baby so they actually let me go a long way over my due date. She was due on the 1st April 1993, and was born at 5.15am on the 19th April (3 hours before I was due to be induced!!!). Take a look at the picture when she was bridesmaid for my wedding 4 months ago, and you tell me if there is anything wrong with her?????

OMG tankett i am actually crying - she is beautiful - you must be so proud to have made something so perfect xxxx

Hi Julia

You dont say how far you are.

Dont they do the nuchal transluency scan, which they do around 12 weeks. they measure the fluid at the back of the babies neck.

Also the sonographer told me that another way of checking is to have a look at the babies nose. As downs babies tend not to have a good nose bone.

i have also read it in a book that i got which shows loads of 3d scans.

Can anyone confirm what i have said.

dont worry.

Hi there...
I'm 36 and was told I was high risk for having downs baby. In SA it's standard to have a NT scan along with blood test to establish high or low risk. The NT scan is done between 11 & 14 weeks. It's also 94% accurate. I was given result (1 in 470 which is quite low for my age) and the specialist still suggested that I have a blood test at 16 weeks to double check. I did some research into the test and found that it has a high negative positive result rate and my midwife told me it's an old fashioned test she would rather avoid. There was no way I was going to have amnio. I then went on to having a detailed scan at 21 weeks which confirmed that baby was fine.
The Nuchal fluid was under 3mm (above that shows risk of abnormality) and nose bone was also present. What you've said Davina is correct.
I do know though, that it's still hard to find many hospitals that do do the NT scan on NHS. You'll have to look at paying for it yourself perhaps.
So don't worry about things Julia. It's only normal I know, but enjoy the rest of your pregnancy - you and baby will be just fine!!!!!
Emilia xx :)

Hi Julia i had a 1 in 48 chance of having a baby with downs. They took me into another room and discussed termination. I was devastated. I had an amnio and baby was fine. I cant believe that they wanted me to terminate before amnio. Just think im at the wrong hospital full stop.
My little girl was fine and perfectly healthy. She is actually a very gifted child and she is now 3 years old.
So do not worry.....hospitals sometimes scare us at the most rediculous times.
Take care, all my love

Thanks everyone - you have all been sooooo kind. I have been away for a couple of days to relax in a health spa with DH. I had a terrible dream on the first night but then relaxed...

Tankett - you have a stunning daughter who you must be so proud of - and after all that worry - thanks for posting her picture, it is very reassuring. I hope my little one is just as beautiful! I have decided that there is nothing I can do so I am just going to try and enjoy the rest of my pregnancy and look forward to the day I meet my little person. In the mean time, I am going to sit back and enjoy the constipation pains! Thanks girls!!!!
