My mates Daughter-in-law to be is pregnant and due at end of may, but Yvonne was telling me last night she just discovered that they had been for an extra scan between 12 & 20 - she knows that its only those 2 that ive had so she was a bit concerned as to why April had an extra one.

April is 38, and Martin (yvonne's son) is 40 - are extra scans offered simply because of mothers age. They have told her that theres no problems - well told he hubby - but as they're not a very close family she's worried that there was cause for concern.

Any ideas?

I don't know tbh. I'm wondering if they are private? A lot of private companies are american and the usa scan at 16 weeks xxxxxxxxx

nope - it was a scan at the local hospital where I had both of mine, and where april had her first one. Its not even the major hospital in the city, but a little one in the town i stay in.

I had one because of a CVS test, they do it as I guess she's more high risk for problems like I was so they do an early check that everything is there and ok. Nothing to worry about!

Extra scans for 'older' mums are not offered here, and as far as I know the nhs do not do that anywhere. I am 37 and hubby is 44 and we have just had 12 wk an 20 wk scans on the nhs.

the only extra scans I can think of are diabetics, they have growth scans throughtout pregnancy to check on baby also I had a heart scan to check my babys heart was ok as I had diabetes x

I'm 40 and did not have a 16 week scan, although I had a scan at 9, 13 and 14 weeks but that was because I thought I was 4 weeks further than I thought at the start and I had a cvs at 14 weeks. The more scans the better IMHO. It may be for a diagnostic test and they want to keep it private.

Thanks everyone. I did wonder if her nucal scan/results had shown something and this was to double check, i just didnt like to say that. Like i said they're not an especially close family, so they maybe are keeping things quiet.
