Hi all,

I'm probably worrying over nothing but my little girl seems to fall and trip a lot. She was walking at 13 months so still learning and is always busy and rushing but can't help worrying slightly.

Also today she was with grandma and they were at a friends and later that friend said about maybe getting her legs checked as she sits with them tucked under and to the floor and she said years ago (she did say maybe things have changed) someone she knew had a child who sat like that and needed physio to do with joints. Cue more worrying for me!!

Kids are flexible so is it just that or should I really check?? Also a couple of times when she was overtired her legs kind of gave way under her :(

Like I say she never stops or sits still so is it just a case of being knackered and rushing too much.

She was breach but had hip ultrasounds and all was fine! I hope I'm just being a silly over worried mummy x

Jess is constantly falling, and they started walking around the same time. You can tell when she's tired/ill/teething as her balance gets worse!

When we saw you guys a few weeks ago, nothing looked wrong to me about the way she sat or walked.

Why do people always do the horror story crap????

Oh, it's hard work being a mummy because everything and anything leads to worrying!

Do you mean sitting on her knees, with her legs splayed out in a kind of "W" shape? My daughter has hyper-mobile joints, which delayed her walking. Her joints are very flexible so it takes longer to build up the muscles to support the ligaments, which means she can be unbalanced easily and gets tired quickly. But she crawled at 11 months and walked at 24 months, and her bendy-ness is really obvious.

But it sounds like your baby hit her physical milestone with walking within the normal age range, and if she is active and getting around ok, maybe what you are witnessing is normal and perfectly fine.

If you are worried, maybe see your GP or talk to the HV. My HV referred us to physio and gave some advice, which is to encourage lots of activity to promote muscle development, stamina and co-ordination. The physio checks in with us every few months and it's just nice knowing they are there for support and advice.

Sounds perfectly normal to me hun, my LO started walking around 13 months (she is almost 15 months now) and she will fall down sometimes when she gets too tired etc. They are just learning and not quite as strong as us adults yet. Also my daughter gets herself in all sorts of funny positions, I think babies are just super flexible. I really wouldn't worry x

My son sits with us legs underneath him, I think a lot if babies do. Sges just started to walk, I'm sure she's fine shed just finding her feet

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about - B falls over a lot when he's tired or over excited. Also it's a sign that their shoes don't fit them properly so worth getting re measured.

Aww thanks ladies :) these stories do bloody make you worry! We got her some new shoes the weekend and I must admit she seems more steady. It's the w shaped sitting she does so I wonder if that was what my friend was referring to?

Youve all made me feel better so thanks. Mwwah x

My daughter sat in that W shape for ages, in fact sometimes she still does. She would also sit with one leg behind her and one in front, it looked really uncomfortable! She used to fall over a lot too, but I think most kids do when they're learning. I remember reading up a lot about the way she was sitting as she sat late and didn't walk until 19 months. But she's never needed physio or anything else and can now jump, skip, run etc., everything she's supposed to be doing!

Try not to listen to scare stories!!! xx

Oh gosh don't listen! I was always sitting in funny positions. As someone else said i have hypermobiloty (double jointed) but I have no problems with my legs, in fact I started ballet at 2 for 20 years. I was also very good at acrobatics! She'll be fine :)

Hey hun, falling over is totally normal! Matthew has been walking for 7 months and still falls and trips. They are called toddlers for a reason I'm a worrier too but honestly she sounds completely normal to me xx

Sounds all normal to me hun. Going from 4 wheel drive to 2 is a really big step and is going to take some time to perfect. I've still got all this to look forward to as Vi is still cruising round the furniture. Even then she still falls down with a bump from time to time. I'm sure the way she sits is fine too. They'll just do whatever's comfortable. xxx

I have two DDs. One sits with legs like yiu describe and is very stable.

My other one doesn't and is always falling over.

From a yiung age, people have asked me if her balance and co-ordination is ok and I've always laughed it off saying it's just Betty. She's a bit of a nutter! It does get worse when she's tired too.

However, we've recently had her ears checked as she's also pretty loud (said pretty, I mean very!). Turns out she does have glue ear or similar, we're waiting to find out a bit more.

Hope I haven't added to your worry, but something else to consider!

xx

I had glue ear when I was small, learning to balance properly was more difficult for me and I have never passed a hearing test in my life (25% in one ear and 75% in the other when I was diagnosed and has improved a little over the years). The doctors told my parents that I learnt to talk from mainly lip reading as I was that deaf at one point but despite this I have never needed a hearing aid as the condition improved and my balance is perfect these days so don't worry too much :)

Thanks ladies - I think there's always one worry or another. She hears the iPhone beeping from the other room ha ha so I reckon her hearing is ok bless her ;)

What is glue ear though??

Ha dotty I like that analogy of 4 wheel to 2 :) good point xx

Glue ear is a condition that causes a build up of fluid in the ear so the vibrations that cause hearing are impeded. It is a lot more common than people think and because it normally sorts itself out within a few months a lot of people probably don't even realise their child had it.

Occasionally you get a case that doesn't seem to want to go away though which is what happened to me and at one point there was talk of me having to have grommets or a hearing aid to try and sort the condition out but it eventually cleared on it's own. Unfortunately my hearing was permanently damaged as a result of being left untreated for so long but in most cases it resolves itself and the childs hearing is fine. The thing with ear problems is they always have an impact on your balance which can in turn cause a child to fall a lot etc which is why OMG mentioned it :)

If you LO hears a phone beep from another room she sounds like she has great hearing though :D
