would you have a male midwife

The thought occured to me last night . I really think i would be happy to have a male midwife ...You don't have to have given birth to understand its bloody painful LOL...What does anyone else think?

It depends what the man is like because some may come over too 'aggresive' and to straight to the point which many pregnant women don't like they like to be treated special, but then again some women midwives are pretty bitchy but men are also less one sided

But perhaps thats just our OH's

i think i'd feel more embarrased in front of a man!!!

 

I had a male midwife when pg with Damo till I moved at 17/18 weeks pregnant. He was really nice and would happily of had him there at the birth. He had a partner and kids and just he just felt it was something he would love to do. His manner was really good, didn't feel uncomfortable with him at all. But then I'm not easily bothered by things like that, in the throws of labour I wouldn't of noticed if it was a trained chimp delivering my baby There are only about 5 or 6 male midwives in the country I think, they have a hard job getting onto the course I think as some women don't want them to examine them or be with them in labour, etc, which they need to do 200 odd exams / 40 births by the end of the course or they won't qualify.

I've always preferred male Drs, so why not male midwives?

No i wouldn't mind at all. I had my consultant with my when i was having Aimee and that was a man. Doesn't really matter to me. My midwife was comlete rubbish and didn't have a clue anyway.

this is so funny as when i was in the earlier stages of labour with Louie & was not in the delivery ward but the labour ward, the first midwife that came to see me was a man
i looked at my mum & said 'hes not delivering my baby' & i was nearly crying!!!

luckily he was not on the delivery ward so i had 2 women midwifes deliver Louie. i suppose in the last throws of labour i wouldn't have given a s**t who delivered Louie, but i would prefer a woman.
he was lovely though, but very gay!!!!

I have to say that I trust men more than women, which many people who know me would find weird, and would probably be more comfortable. I am dreading labour but if i knew a male midwife would be there I would feel different.

I don't think that I would mind as long as he was good at what he does

My midwife is a man, and I feel very comfortable with him. In fact I feel more comfortable than I did with the female midwife I had before (I didn't have a problem with her, they just reshuffled the staff).

His manner is great and he's very knowledgable. Also I think it's great for my partner because a male midwife can relate more to the father than a female midwife can, and the appointments are more a discussion with the three of us than they were with a female midwife.

As for the birth itself I can't see I'll have a problem. As someone else said I think I'll be rather too distracted to be worried what sex my midwife is - and if I need a consultant there they are all male in my area in any case.

There was a trainee male midwife at my last surgery check up-he did my check over, and was so sweet and gentle...LO was booting his hand and he was tickled pink!!

I wouldnt mind at all if there was a male midwife at the birth, I think OH would feel better with a bit of male company...they could always talk footie in between contractions
