what do they do when you have a sweep *im stupid*

i think they do an internal and just use their fingers to "sweep " the vagina and they say the distubance can bring on labour...i think anyway i'm not too sure!

Thats me back... all that panic for nothing!!

Got to hospital and midwife asked how I was told her about false starts I'd had over the weekend - she had a feel of my tummy and listened to heart beat and decided to leave the sweep for today!!

She thinks I'm gonna go myself over the next 3days or so!! If not back on Monday for sweep - I dont need it. And they have changed my induction date from this Sat to a week today at 3pm!

Gutted my induction has changed but at the same time happy and hopeful that I'll go naturally!!

Thanks for all your messages - just back to the waiting game now!!

S. xx

Q.
What is a cervical sweep?

A.
A cervical sweep (also known as sweeping or stripping the membranes), which is usually done in conjunction with a cervical stretch, is a procedure that can be carried out by a midwife or doctor when a woman is overdue, in an attempt to trigger labour. The most effective time for carrying out the procedure has been found to be at at least 41 weeks. The procedure is performed via an internal vaginal examination using two fingers. The midwife or doctor places their fingers inside the cervical os (opening) and gently spreads the fingers apart, thus ‘stretching’ the cervix. This may encourage the release of prostaglandin, which helps to soften the cervix and stimulate contractions. Lining the inside of uterine wall are the membranes, which lie over the internal os of the cervix. The ‘sweep’ is done by the midwife or doctor using their fingers to ‘peel’ (or strip) these membranes away from the internal os using a sweeping action (round and round). This too can stimulate the release of prostaglandin. The latest research does show that there is a 17 per cent decrease in women needing to be formally induced following a stretch and sweep, but adds that this procedure can be very uncomfortable and may cause irregular contractions and sometimes a small amount of bleeding (spotting). However, formal methods of induction can be just as uncomfortable, if not worse.

It's not that I didnt want the sweep - it just sounded horrid!!

A membrane sweep is when the midwife inserts her finger into your cervix and seperates it from the membrane by moving her finger in circular motions.

I am excited tho as she thinks I'll go soon and go naturally too. COME ON BABY HURRY UP!!!!

drink some sherry and have some SEX!!!! haha YER get that baby going!!!!!!! hehe xxxx

i feel like i never want sex again right now!! but its gotta be better than that sweep thing..god i pray i dont ever need that.

actually i'm starting to feel really sick, these pains are getting worse and i feel like i want to throw up!

Teeeheee

The midwife actually said

"go home have a hot curry, a bottle of becks and a night of passion and we'll see baby real soon"

My poor hubby nearly fell off his chair!!
