My little girl is 18 days old and I think she is suffering badly with wind but I thought I would ask other peoples opinions. She is a greedy little thing and I wind her after every feed but she keeps going bright red arching her back and either pulling her legs up or stretching out, she then makes grunting noises like she is trying to poo. But she does plenty of poos, she is very unsettled overnight but feeds more frequent overnight. Her abdomen is also looking distended and feels quite hard esp when she stretches out. If you take her nappy off and let her kick her legs she cries pulls her legs up and goes bright red and looks really distressed and then she might pass a bit of wind or poo. Afterwards she just goes to sleep. I am worrried about feeding her too much and making it worse, I have been feeding her every 2-3 hours because she is premature and only 5.5 lbs. I have started her on infracol. Does this sound normal? I try massage and winding regularly and tilting her cot but it seems to be getting worse. She has viomited a few times too. I just hate seeing her so distressed and worry about her big abdomen!

This was Imogen!!! And still is to a degree.
She had pretty bad wind up until around 10/12 weeks. And she also has silent reflux.
Infacol helped us a little but not much. Once Leora is 1 month I'd recommend gripe water..it really helps us a lot!
Does she scream like in pain? I think Immy was a couple weeks when we started her on infant gaviscon as the doctor suggested it was silent reflux. Another symptom of that is like coughing on the acid if that makes sense?
All babies do suffer with their wind to a degree though. Are you bfing still? Try keep her as upright as possible feeding if you can and for 30 mins after :) xx

Imogens tummy was massive too ,I'm not sure if it was down to her wind or a newborn thing but everyone told me it was norm :). I was worried too lol! This was her about a wee older than Leora lol i remember taking this and sending it to my friend concerned about her tummy lol. Xx

Thanks so much Hun u have made me feel soooo much better! That's exactly what Leora is like! I am BF and yes the odd time she screams when she cries and seems distressed. I will try keeping her upright during and after feeding and see if that helps xx

Aw glad I have helped :)
Upright should defo help the wind and if it is a bit of reflux too then that also helps that. See how she gets on :). They can cry a lot with wind. I noticed Imogens was more the silent reflux when she started crying during feeds in pain and spitting it out refusing it etc and that happened consistently and getting worse so just keep an eye and see doctors if it gets worse in case it could be a bit of reflux :).
They do struggle with wind early on though but wind gets better I promise! I still give her gripe water sometimes now to make sure it's all out but usually she just brings it up with a bit of a rub now. I used to spend hours and hours winding her and she wouldn't lay down at all! Then as soon as their digestive system matures it gets so much easier :). Sounds like you are doing a great job!
Ooh also with the infacol..it didn't help for us but it can help for some but what I heard was it builds up so must be given every single feed and apparently missing it once can stop it being as effective. Are her poos okay in consistency? Not firm or anything? I think infacol can make them constipated but sounds like she's doing fine with that and is less likely a breastfed baby getting constipated anyway I think :). Xxx

I find that if I lay my lo down for a couple of mins and then sit him upright it helps get his wind up, also circling him clockwise and anti clockwise and then backwards and forwards in between rubbing his back helps.

Does she seem comfortable during feeding? Xx

Oooh yeah we do the circling too and back and forwards haha i do it singing row your boat lol! Xx

Thanks guys x browneyed girl any pics of your little one? How are u getting on? X

Other than sometimes gussling she seems fine during feeding x

Why 2-3hrs is tht your choice or hers? I was feeding almost every hr. Have you tried feeding on demand? Iv also been told if tgey dont feed much in the day they will make up for it at night. My baby is al.ost 11months and still has awfull wind. Have you tried taki g her of and winding mid feed x

A bit of both, during the day she doesn't always wake for a feed and the MW said not to let her go more than 3 hours without a feed so if she doesn't demand it I always make sure she has had a feed within 3 hours from the last one. Overnight it ranges from every hour to every 3 hours and I feed her on demand but she wakes overnight as she is more hungry. Yeah I have just started trying to wind her during feeds too. This am she went so red and was straining so much she brought up some milk so I rang the midwife and she said it could be reflux and if no better on infracol then book doctors appt. blueclass I can't believe your little one is nearly one xx
