If I want to discuss Tyler's sleeping. Its been suggested he might have tongue tie, he might have reflux, he just wants comfort, he's not eating enough in the daytime.

Do I ring my HV, not sure how much I trust the team?
The doctor? Who is lovely but everytime I've been I've mentioned that he doesn't sleep and I get an aww he will.
Or the national bfing helpline when this couldn't be bf related?

I can't get to our not so local bfing group unless OH takes a day off as I don't drive.

Starting to worry he might have something wrong I'm ignoring!

It's very tough this from my experience.

I think I was lucky in a sense that the baby played up at the right time but I struggled to get them to take me seriously. And I think part of that is because Tilly chops has an ear piercing cry and winds herself up very quickly. She does have other issues which you know about but the sleeping thing was a problem for us too.

I hope you can find a sympathetic ear hun, I don't know how you manage with the constant waking. What is the crying like? Is it a whingy one or a distressed one? Or is he just awake and not crying?

You could try the GP first but I get the impression they aren't the best to help. How do you find your health visitor?

Sorry just read the GP wasn't helpful which I suspected.

Could you try and be pushy? I.e say it is not normal for a baby to be waking every half an hour long term. Say you are worried about his growth/development due to lack of sleeping?

You might get more sympathy from the HV

Tbh it's your story that's got me worried as everyone tells me some babies don't sleep (well my HV did!) but maybe that's brushing a problem under the carpet?

I know there's a sleep regression at 4 months but since his 6 week jabs he hasn't slept longer than 2 1/2 hours ever. (As a newborn he'd go 4.)

His cry is distressed noises that get more cryey if ignored. He's been in bed with me all night the last 2 nights.

a couple of my friends were reccommended someone by their hv, so that could be your first point of call - if you didn't rate your hv you could ask them straight out 'who should i call re his sleeping' and sort of bypass them.

in edinburgh the 'edinburgh sleep lady' is meant to be very good, one phonecall from her was all it took for a couple of my friends for there babies to be transformmed - not so good for you but am sure there will be someone wherever you are!

good luck!

I'd say your HV first then your GP! Good luck.

Max seems to be going backwards he's still only going 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours :(

Xxx

I know those noises you mean. I get them too, I think they could be reflux or wind related because the baby is unable to relax enough to achieve a deep sleep.

Have you tried catching him when he first starts and sticking a dummy in and shushing and gentle patting? This might relax him enough to get him back off.

I'm getting a crib cos since being here the rocking bassinet/dummy has really helped to settle her without removing her from her bed.

you said on a diffrent thread that he feeds longer and more often at night. i think i also read that you feed him to sleep could it just be hes sucking for comfort have you tried a dummy? sorry if you have its just a thought xx

Just got an appt with the doctor tomorrow for him I'm seeing a different one but I dunno how I feel about that. My normal one is really lovely and knows Tyler but I wonder if a fresh view might be better for him?

I was on hold for ages and thinking about it and he doesn't spend that much time laying on his back in the daytime and he's fine. He's been grizzley but I thought that's teething, maybe it's not? Nighttime he's laid in his cot and he just doesn't want to know!

I looked up that sleep lady and nearly everything she's put about reflux is Tyler, including the explosive poos!

He won't take a dummy. Never has.

Tilly wouldn't take a dummy particularly. They have changed this at the hospital for me. She now will not be parted from it.

Have you tried different teats? The avent ones and cherry teats are favourites here.

I think a dummy could really help.

I feel rather pissed about the breastfeeding advice really, especially on the nipple confusion. Don't give dummies/bottles etc I personally think its a very individual thing and it is completely fine for some babies. And in addition, if you don't do it soon enough it causes problems with getting them to accept them later.

I held off and held off for weeks about this and it has resulted in a bit of misery.

My Tilly is a very good feeder at the breast and I could have given a dummy /bottle of expressed milk weeks back and it wouldn't have hindered feeding.

I've tried 6!

Tbh tho I'm not too keen on him having one but I've tried a lot of them. He'll suck but as soon as you move you hand away he spits them out.

I wasn't keen either pinky, I know it can affect their teeth etc but they have assured me this is when they are used when baby is older.

And for selfish reasons partly, if it makes her more settled and she is comforted by it I'd rather use it.

In our case using the breast for comfort created more discomfort in the end!!

Alyssa is the same, she occasionally will keep it in for a while and drift off but more often she wil spit it out or try and chew on it. my mum used to use glycerine to make me keep mine in tho lol. she likes it when its been dipped in gripe water

I'm gonna try when he gets up.

He's been asleep for an hour and 45 wtf!!?!?

He used to sleep in his bouncy chair a lot but not for longer iykwim?

How do you get them to sleep upright?

In the sure start centre in Liverpool were were i live on certain days there is someone who you can go in and talk to about your baby sleeping if there having problems settling of a night ETC zx

I think your right to check all avenues, it could just be that thats what he's like or it could be something else. I had a very difficult bf'ing baby & she had nothing wrong with her. But she cried constantly & fed every hour-hour & half. And i was told thats just how she is.

On the other hand, Kayden's reflux wasn't diagnosed til he was 4.5 months & he'd had it from birth, but we didn't pick up on the small things he did & assumed he was just "difficult" we even joked about boys being more hassle than girls, and in reality he was probably in agony for months

But as Torino said, its so hard to get solid answers. The tounge tie thing should be easily diagnosed reflux/colic, a diff story. Esp when you have a baby who's gaining weight fine (my LO was heavier than he should have been so I kept getting fobbed off that it wasn't reflux, when he was actually comfort drinking & thats why he was over-weight) when i'd asked my HV for advice & suggested it cld be reflux she told me to keep feeding him what he wanted!! It was the following w/end he started going blue, paediatrician said he shld never have been drinking so much.

Personally if it was me i'd avoid the HV. I'd go straight to the docs, but that being said they can sometimes brush you off

Hope you get some answers

xxxx

Dont put LO in bouncy chair to sleep this causes their tummies to be scrunched up.

Putting them upright to sleep would be elevating the cot as much as you can. LO will probably slip down so put a rolled towel at the bottom.
