Has your baby got a white coat on her tongue?

Mine has a fairly thick coat - could this be thrush? Elsewhere in the mouth is fine. I am just concerned that this may be a start of a thursh and I know I could get it in my nipples too...

Any advice would we welcome...[/list]

is it there all the time? if it's there just after a feed it could just be the milk, but if it's there all the time it sounds like thrush.

I'd get some medication straight away, and you'll need some cream for your nips too because you'll be passing it back and forth otherwise.

Good luck.....

HIya ,

My baby had a constant white coating on his tongue and my MIL said it could be thrush. I asked the HV who checked his mouth and as the coating was only on his tongue she suggested it was just milk and not thrush.

HV said thrush leaves a thick white coating on the roof of mouth, gums as well as the tongue. It also causes babies to go off their feeds and my hungry little monster is still as ravenous as ever!

Ask your health visitor of see your GP tho xx

are you getting any pain on BF'ing? A shooting pain when you first start or pain at any time? Is the coat of white on bubs tongue there all the time or just after feeding?

I'd phone your midwife (not the doctor becasue midwives are more up to date on treatment for breastffeding mums and thrush).
She will tell you what you need and then if shes like mine was she will have a word with the doctor at the surgery for you to make sure you get the up to date treatments.
both you and the baby will need treating.

All i can advise at the mo is to continue breastfeeding feeding baby as normal. If its painful try and bare it or take a paracetamol or two.
Avoid coffee or caffiene related drinks, and chocolate.
These are said top contribute to the symtoms of thrush

you'll be fine - keep up the good work with your BF'ing.

Oliver had a white coat on his tongue for about a week, which my midwife told me was probably mik residue - I then caught the thrush off him and it was agony for the few days that it took to clear it up. Now if he got a white coating again I'd put the cream on straightaway before he passed it on to me, because I nearly gave him formula (my goal is to get to at least 6 months without it) just for a break from the pain.

I used Daktarin, but you can also keep your nipples dry and exposed to the air, change your breast pads and wash your hands after every feed, and change your bra regularly if your nipples touch it because it's so easy to pass backwards and forwards from you to your baby, and from other surfaces back to you.

Thank you for your replies :D

The white coat is only on her tongue, and she still feeds very eagerly. I haven't had any pains while breastfeeding. Sais that, I am going to have it checked out as don't want things to escalate...

Btw I have tried to 'air my boobs', but as I leak like nobody else it's a bit tricky :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I would say it's milk.
DD had this (and DS has it) - I got told it was thrush by my HV, it wasn't. Thrush is generally white specks not an all over coating. I would still ask someone but to be honest, if you're in no nipple pain, you're good

I've had the same problem - my HV said it could be thrush and we have had some anti-biotics and cream to use on her bottom and my nips. We have been doing it for 2 weeks and it has cleared up her nappy rash but she still has a white tongue. I have had a sharp pain across my chest every so often, but it is a bit better. I would get it checked out by your HV as they might be able to write a prescription for you if it is thrush.

My little boy has a white area on his tongue. I asked the GP at his 6 week appointment and she told me that oral thrush tends to show up in patches rather than one area and that his was just 'milk tongue'.

I had it confirmed this morning that DD doesn't have thush. It motmally appears in cheeks or on the roof of the mouth and it's patcky or flakey as some of you said.

I am pleased we are clear :cheer: It is funny how I am far more concerned about LO than have ever been of myself! But I guess it's only natural...
