I need to express milk this week as I have a Christmas night out on Thursday. I want to try and get around 10 feeds incase Madison decides to feed loads at night.
I tried her on a bottle of expressed milk a few weeks ago and she had about 3.5oz so thinking 4oz a feed?
When is the best time to express the milk? Between feeds or straight after?

Thank you in advance xx

If you can do the opposite boob WHILE you are feeding you'll get a better let down. During night is technically the best time - although used to express when she ha just gone down at night. so I could 'empty' and know she wouldn't want fed for a wee while. Or first thing in the morning if she'd slept well and I was full. Xxx

On my iPhone - so cant see tickers :(

Night time is best after 8pm. There is a hormone that has much higher levels on an evening that increases milk flow. But as above express at the same time as feeding and keep milk at the bottom of the fridge at the back and it will keep for 5 days :) xx

Thank you :) I find it hard to express while feeding as LO can bu fussy and want to change sides. Hopefully should get enough for daddy to manage!

My breast feeding nurse said its important to express at morning as this is when your breasts are the fullest, if you start to do it at night then your going to produce more milk when sleeping snd end up with sore full leaking boobies when your baby isnt feeding xx

Another vote for in the morning.

That's when I do it, when LO is feeding I do it on the other side.

Are you saying you are aiming to express 40oz for overnight? I'd be careful with building your supply up that much in the short term, you run the risk of being left with massive norks and then needing to express while you are out. It's best to do it over a longer period, so you don't end up with a huge excess of milk that your baby won't be able to drink.

Thanks ladies
I've found mornings are best for expressing :) I can't manage doing at the same time as feeding though.
Torino.. I re thought my bottles I have 4 feeds for her now which should be plenty. We have emergency formula bottles if she decides to take more! :)

Wonderful. I am pleased you are sorted.

I found a way of balancing the baby and the pump using my maternity pillow. It does look a bit funny mind. Especially now she is older and is massive

There is a bottle called 'breastflow' (£6 on amazon) which we used with C when he divided to get fussy. It mimics the sucking action of the breast x

I have the variflow teats which she seems fine with. This little lady doesn't care how she gets her milk so long as there's plenty of it!! Lol
