As above. What was the 1st thing you started giving your LO too??

My HV suggested, a rusk, mixed with an oz of milk about 6pm in the evening to start with, to fill him up before bed.

Anyone tried this? Or did you just go with baby rice? How old was you LO?

cor, i'm amazed that your HV has suggested weaning that early too  WHO recommendations say wait til 6 months and all the HVs round here are v keen on us sticking to that. connor's showing all the signs for being ready to wean, but he's still happy and growing well on booby milk so i'm not going to do anything with him yet.

I started at 17 weeks (4 months) as Jacob was very ready, he's a big boy! We started off on baby rice, just a very small amount. It's very similar taste to milk so can be good as a first food.

My HV siad it was recommended not to start weaning until 6 months but she said we wouldn't get to 6 months with Ja because of his size and appetite but she was dead against weaning before 4 months. I wouldn't of give him anything before then anyway.

I wouldnt start yet hun. A friend of a friend tried weaning her little girl at 10 weeks and the poor thing got so ill.

Chester isnt even interested in food yet!

I would definately wait - I've read about the allergies it can cause weaning too early.

Harrison is a big boy but he's got poor head control so I'm holding off for now. He is ready though he just needs to master not wobbling his head

your HV is a muppet tbh. If you are thinking of weaning at such an early age then talk to a Dr for advice. 17 weeks is the minimum advised as before this their digestive system and kidneys are just too immature to cope with anything else.

Yeah I agree. Their bodies aren't built to cope with solids until this time. My friend was told to start weaning her wee boy at 3 months and was made to feel dreadful by her HV because she chose not to (he's bottle fed). He's still a very happy chappy almost 2 months later, still on just his milk.

I think because he has reflux, shes thinking that he will be able to keep solids down easyer.

I however, am going to wait till hes showing signs that he needs more than milk, no one knows my baby better than me. Id never ween him at 9 weeks, id hope to get to about 5 months. Making bottles is easy, feeding them to him is easy  why would I want to rush into more hard work for me!!

I thought it odd, figured it cudnt hurt, but, I get to sleep from 10pm til 5am then half 5 til atleast 8 so im in no hurry to force food into him to make him go longer.

Thanks for the replies though... most ppl seem to wait til 6months then? that seems reasonable.

Her advice is absolutely shocking. She isn't qualified in infant nutrition so in no way should she be giving out advice like that. Even if you take out of the equation that rusks are basically just sugar in a biscuit form the fact remains that she is advising you to wean your 9 week old :wall: She needs reporting or shooting. I do know some people wean their babies younger due to reflux but this has been done under the guidance of a paedetrician.

Your littleone is doing spot on, and sounds like his milk is filling him up just fine.

The NCT have good advice on when towean clicky

I agree with above how she can advise you on giving a baby rusks as a weaning food for a baby that has reflux s awful, she needs shooting.

Go to your doctor orask to speak to another hv whose better qualified. You can get sugar free rusks but thats not the point, baby rice is much better suited as a first weaning food.

 thats crazy :shakehead: if you fed him rusk before bed it wouldnt settle him at night one bit!! it would probably make him ill or choke! Its waaaaaaaaaay to early to wean any HV and mother knows that! :wall: Dont listen to her hun you know whats best for your baby and thats definately not rusks!

I dont get it??!? she said mixed with 1 oz?! it would be just a damp rusk!! i wouldnt let me son eat that even now?! how would you get it on a spoon?

God only knows, shows how much thought I gave it - your right, it wouldnt even turn into a paste would it, it would be a damp biscuit. :puke:

The way I look at it, theres clearly something wrong inside of him at the moment. I dont want to go agrivating anything by introducing something hes not used to.

Give or take, with the reflux hes gaining weight ok... so I see no need as I said before to give him anything else. Though, learning that rusks are what, sugar biscuits... I wont be giving them to him ATALL never mind with milk :shakehead:

Dont worry about the throwing up either its part of a babies life im sure my son enjoys it sometimes or im sure he plans it just as ive put a nice clean top on him, or ive jsut got changed, or when we're out and have not wet wipes.

My son throws up every day but the doctor said its not bad enough for medicine so im happy if he is. I just put up with the puke! All i do to help at night is his cot is slightly tilted so hes not horizontal.

eating a rusk wont stop him being sick, he'll just do rusk boffs! :puke:

There are a few ladies on here who have babies with reflux, they might be able to give you some advice on how to ease it a little bit? Hope it doesn't trouble him for too much longer

what milk is he on? Harrison has reflux and is on the comfort

hes on c and g comfort... he gets constipated on it, and his nappys are, well... undiscribable... eakkkk :puke:

Anyone reccon another brand of staydown milk, sma, or aptimil etc would be better? Anyone used them and not had a constipated baby?

I use the comfort and not had any problems re constipation, he is still sick a few times though but a lot less than before.

it makes kys poo green :puke:

It really helped with his colic but did nothing to stop him puking.

Eek weaning already? What terrible advice!
We are still breastfeeding so cant help with the formula thing but we find gaviscon and infacol help lots, and until recently kept the head of the moses basket raised at night. Reflux is so horrible and the sickness is a pain but as long as LO is gaining weight Im sure its all fine.We just have to be patient I think!
My theory is that its not the weaning itself that helps reflux, it just coincides with the guts maturing so appears to help even though actually its just getting better cos baby is getting bigger! Dunno if thats true tho

for the constipation put half a teaspoon of fine brown sugar in his bottle a couple times a day. It works every time for us.
