When can they see twins?

Is it possible to tell at 7wks if one is having twins? I had a scan a few backs which showed one heartbeat. I have since been thinking 'what if they can't tell twins until 3 mth scan!' It's just that they run in my family and people keep mentioning it!

im sure anything after 7weeks you can tell cos there would be more than 1 heartbeat? my scan details say 1/1 foetus so id expect itd have picked up more than one!

Sometimes they miss one twin (one hides behind the other) but thats very rare as the nurse has to take measurements and have a good look at baby. If you are having twins they will deff be able to tell at the next scan. But if they only saw one baby at this scan it is very doubtfull you are having twins.

I think its a normal thing to worry about. I thought they were going to find twins at my last scan as my OH has twins in his family. But they only found one baby... thank god! lol

Don't want to worry anyone! But my cousin's wife has just found out she is expecting twins at 12 weeks.
She had IVF so had already had a couple of scans. But as violet-glow has already mentioned, one was hiding behind the other and wasn't spotted until 12 weeks.

To put your mind at rest a little maybe... I had my first scan when docs thought I was about 12-14 weeks because of the size of me.

Actually turned out that I was 8 weeks and both little twinnies were seen clear as anything and heard too and that was 8 years ago!

It was also spotted that I was having twins at 6 weeks, when I had a scan due to complications before I lost them last Feb.

Modern technology has advanced quite a lot now!

As for your OH having twins in the family, he doesn't affect it I'm afraid.

Identical twins are a random chance of an egg splitting into two and Non Identical twins comes from you actually dropping more than one egg.

This can be hereditry in women and is in my family but not in men.

Only the woman carries the hereditry twin gene.

Looking at twin chances, I was working it out and thinking about being scared of having twins... apparently I have 5 times more chance of having twins than one... that is scary and I'm still trying

Is it true that pregnancy symptoms are stronger with twins i.e. earlier and more frequent sickness?

They can usually detect most twins by that time hun, but it has been known to have been missed and spotted at around 18 weeks I was reading someones story the other night.................although this is very rare!!!!!!

You would usually appear bigger for your dates and have possibly worse pregnancy symptoms due to the higher levels of hormones, if twins was a possibility!

everyone keeps saying to me i could be having twins its not in our family at all either side, i think its just something people say sometimes!!
