When can I stop the dreamfeed?

I'm still bf but as advised by the hospital I don't feed on demand. T has 5 feeds a day generally around the same time.

The last feed of the day I wake her up and feed her before I go to bed.

Now, I am starting to wean her slowly. Today for instance, she has had a couple of carrot batons, some sweet potato and swede roasted chips and an oz of fruit purée plus one spoon of banana porridge at breakfast time.

Do you think I would be able to cut out the dreamfeed at this point? How will I know when I can cut the milk down? Is it simply trial and error?

I suppose try one night and see what happens??

It depends on how long she goes after that feed really, we dropped it when he didnt seem to want a feed in the early morning!! Try it and if she is fine then forget about it and if she still needs it then carry on doing it!!

Lol. It sounds like a silly question now I guess.

I'm worried about my boobs/milk supply a little I think. I might express in the evening for a bit until I am sure she doesn't need it.

Why did the hospital say to not feed on demand? In my experience its baby that needs to tell you when they're ready to drop a feed x

Baby will drop a feed by herself when she is getting enough calories from solids... If you compare the calorie content of milk to say carrots you need a he'll of a lot of carrots to come close to matching the milk to :flower:

You dont feed reflux babies on demand hun.

Alot of doctors/HV's advise not to feed any baby on demand because reflux is so common. Infact - I've never actually heard anyone been given the advice to feed on demand - apart from the first week after birth.

Torino - i'd drop the dream feed. Your feeding LO for no point really, as should would wake if hungry anyway - although she might be used to the dreamfeeds now & might wake whereas before she wouldn't.

LO will be getting enough nutrients from the food & the other 4 bottles at that age. My LO started weaning at 6 months & he dropped from 5 to 4 bottles a day.

And yeah you could express....no harm I suppose & keeps your mind at rest.

We took ages to drop it, mainly because our lo is a bit light and we thought the extra feed did no harm and she wasn't very cuddly back then so a snuggly dream feed was a nice way to round the day off!

But when she is starting to take a bit less, or gets pissed off at being worken up, I would start to reduce feed times by 5 mins every few days.

Thank you ladies.

I think I'm going to trial this week and see if she wakes in the night for food.

I'm finding it difficult to work out when to feed etc actually I might put another post about that.

id drop it or at least give it a go and see because you will never know unless you try one night at least :( Aila just dropped it be herself weeks ago, she will usually have 4 210ml bottles during the day last one around 6:30/7 and sleep thru until half 7 next morning. Theres the odd night every two weeks she'll wake at 5:30 ish so i give her a bottle and she'll go straight back to sleep. But if i were you and baby sleeps and u take her up for a dream feed and she never woke then i would definately be dropping it before it becomes too much of a routine xxxx

Like you we woke our lo fr her last feed, then decided once started weaning not to and she just slept through till her normal wake up! We wished we had tried it sooner!

SOrry I missed this earlier.

My LO has severe reflux and I was told not to feed more often than every 3 hours by the paediatricians. (It caused a war between the paed and the HV with her 'feed on demand' advice actually :oooo: )

I am therefore struggling a bit with the whole feeding thing now with trying to wean etc.

I'm going to have her weighed again tomorrow and see where she's at weight wise and that might help inform my decision as well.

Must be hard hon, especially when the people meant to help are squabbling amongst themselves! I hope her weight is how you'd like it and that any changes you make go well :)

Well she weighs 20lb 9oz at 24 weeks so is certainly not withering away. Shes actually gone above the 98th line now so I'm going to stop the feed this week and see how we go I think!

i wouldnt worry about the lines too much hun, Alyssa has always hovered around just above the 98th centile for weight and height and noone has ever had a concern about her certainly not me lol. is it a bit of a jump from where she was last? she probably dosent need the dreamfeed now anyway so its deffo worth dropping it to see what happens

I wussed out.

Gonna do it tomorrow instead lol. Im slowly cutting it down so my norks don't get too full lol
