i only found out myself a few weeks ago too and this is my 3rd baby! lol
its wehre the midwife checks to see if your cervix is dilateing and thining, if it is, then they will give you a sweep, which involes putting there fingers in to your cervix (if open) and then running them around the edge and seperateing it from the bag of waters and stretching your cervix slightly to try to encourage labour.
it doesnt hurt but it is uncomfy.

Apparently they went 'out of style' for a while, but are back 'in' again now that more maternity units are midwife led. Sounds pretty uncomfortable to me!!!
