What's a 'receiving blanket'?

I was looking on mothercare's webiste for things.. and in a range that I like "I Love My Bear' there is a "Cute and cosy baby receiving blanket "

And I was wondering what the heck it is.. and how many I need

I think its just a blanket for swaddling a baby in all nice, tight and cosy??

It's a blanket that the baby is immediately wrapped in after birth - so you 'receive' your newborn baby in a new blanket, rather than a hospital one!

Its tradition in our family to have one made for you.. So if you can knit or relatives can.. get knitting... Its a nice alternative...
