My OH and I went to the library today and got a book each; I got "What to expect when youre expecting" and my OH got "from lad to dad"

I noted earlier that his book is at least half the size of mine and we flicked through and it addresses a lot of the emotional, and relationship level stuff as well as basics on practicalities of pregnancy and lots of reminders to be sympathetic and nice! I quite liked his book actually, he's already asking if my boobs still hurt and proudly waving his booking saying "thought so".

So I settled down for a read of my book, hoping for excitement and general motherly support from the book and frankly I am totally freaked out! Before I've got to page 100 we've pretty much covered everything which can go wrong in pregnancy, STDs, smoking, drinking, drugs, domestic violence (the book kindly points out that it is more common in pregnancy - cue me glaring at OH suspiciously, no signs of him turning into a drunken thug so far...) Then I read the parts about various tests which may be carried out, which from my point of view, make the tests sound alarmingly invasive and have left me (slightly irationally) wanting to refuse intervention at all.

Has anyone else read this book? should I carry on, maybe she gets all the negative stuff out the way first?? Or maybe I just need to face up to all this stuff now? I've only ever read good reviews about this book...I just don't get it!

I wouldnt read it. I hate books that are all about negativity. I read Jenny McCarthy's 'Belly Laughs' and it was up beat and funny bit addressed the not so glamorous bits too. I enjoyed it and it was so easy going I also read her 'Baby Laughs' too.

My OH got From Dad to Lad and he said it was crap!

someone told me it was a really good book! i cant remember which ones i got, i had loads! OH never got any - he's too illiterate

I had this - the UK version and the Australian version; it covers all bases and answers every question about everything. I think I looked at it most days! The only thing I didnt read was the chapter about having a C-section; I wish to God that I had because I ended up having an emergency section; just goes to show you should be prepared for everything which I think is what this book achieves :) (if you read it properly haha)

I bought it on Ebay when I was pg with my wee man :) I'd already read it though, I borrowed it from the library with my 10 year old daughter.

I like the month by month guide but wish it had been done by weeks instead as it confused me .....isn't hard though

Ahhh, I have an American version, had to skip through talks of pap smears and medical insurance! Didn't realise there was UK (an australian) versions. Why would cardiff library stock the US version?!?! Didn't get to the month by month bit yet, got too fed up with all the detialed STD talk!
