Jakob is 12 weeks old now and he is on hungrier baby milk, 7oz bottles and he has a bottle every 2 and a half to 3 hours so he dosnt go very long between feeds in the day....however he does sleep from about 11-12pm-8-10am but during the day he just eats sooo much!! some people have advised weaning but is this bad for him? I have asked some pharmacists but they say dont because its bad for their tummys because they arnt ready for it????

What shall i do? try and hold out on the milk? I do try and give him water too but he dosnt really like it lol! as soon as he realises it isnt milk he spits it out!

i weaned sophie at 12 weeks hun, she was a huge baby and needed more :D

So when do you start?
Sometimes between 4 and 6 months. Don't be tempted to start before 4 months and talk to your Health Visitor if you are unsure. At around 10-12 weeks many babies have a growth spurt and need more milk than usual. If you are breastfeeding you may long to start on solids at this time, but it is very unlikely that your baby's tummy will be ready for solids…even if you are!

They say their digestive systems arent ready till 17 weeks if he starts waking up in the night for a fed then thats when you can usually tell they are ready. Rhys feeds every 3 hours and hes on 7-8ozs but not hungry baby. As he sleeps all night he has to get all his feeds in the day so thats why he has a bottle every 3 hours.
If you feel that Jakob needs to go on solids then do it, You know him best every babys different.

dont know if I really helped much then!

I started Alfie at 14weeks because he was just so mardy and eating so much and i couldnt satisfy him he took to it like a duck to water and i think i was keeping him waiting, also he hated babyrice and rusks went straight onto food food and loves it he now eats two meals a day porridge then veg and has a pudding and he loves it is so content and no problems at all, if you think hes ready Cas do it i think its awfull when people make you feel bad for doing it as i kept getting told not to by HV etc and in the end after him constantly waking in night and screaming through day through hunger i thought sod them hes hungry im not listening to him cry like this any more, since then hes been a different baby and so happy, go with your gut Cassi

well said alfiesmummy dont let people make u feel u are doing the wrong thing, if he is ready he is ready hun, its ur call

If you wean early, there is an increase risk of them having allergies.
And it is best to only give gluten free food.
I weaned Ewan about 2 weeks before he was 4 months, but to be honest they take soo little food at the beginning that it wont make much difference to their feeding pattern, and if you try to give them too much too soon you with find that they might get bad wind as their tummies have not been used to food, Ewan would take about 3-4 spoons of baby rice.
When i started weaning him he started getting excema.

I think you have to do what you feel is best for you and baby, you can try it and see, many babys are going through a growth spurt at this age and milk will alway be their main meal till 1 yr old.
Get all the info you can and go from there.

I had the same problem Cassi, Stanley is now 20 lbs and has always been big for his age.

You will get so much advice here, I will only tell you what I did. I wanted to wait as long as possible, 6 months if I could, as there ARE risks associated with giving food too early, no matter what you hear.

The HV's said there was no way I'd get that far. The bare minimum for recommended weaning is 17 weeks (4 months) and never before.

I had a couple of uncomfortable weeks with Stanley where it felt like I was feeding all the time, throughout the night again too. I had him weighed weekly to ensure he wasn't losing weight. Then dead on 17 weeks I started him on baby rice and home purees.

What can I say? I'm a textbook mum and maybe I do read too much!

Do whats right for you and Jakob xxxxx

wow stanleys a big boy!!! he weighs the same as ellis and ellis is big for his age!!!!! :rotfl:

xxxx

aw dont you just love chunky babies?

When Harley was born we was prem and only weighed 6lb. but he has really made up for it

he eats what ever i give and he dont refuse even when he is stuffed

i thought i needed to start weaning at 12 weeks infact even at 8weeks i thought he needed solids. but i held out and it passed by 6months he was still only happy with his bottle just lots of it. but his weight was way of charts. it looks worse to because he is being plotted on the graph 5weeks younger then what he is as it goes by his birthdate. the HV said it was time to try and get him on 3 meals a day. but when i started him he was only interested in rusks and porrage. but i stuck to veg evey day and now he loves it. between a yogot and veg he would pick veg. he is a carrot monster
he is now 24.6lb

the 6 months weaning is more for breastfed babies, it was a ploy to try and get mums to breastfeed exclusively longer. i weaned nathan at 13-14 weeks no problems whatsoever.

its kind of do dont really isnt it...Its not a growth spurt he has always been like this hence not been able to meet demand with breastfeeding and him just losing weight with it....

I think il try and leave it then untill he starts waking at night ..

hun if u feel Jakob needs it then give it to him even if its only a lil while u know wot ur baby needs

i weaned my first at 12 weeks becasue she was hungry and had stopped sleeping through. I started giving her baby rice before bed and it worked a treat!
my second daughter was about 17 weeks
third was around 14 weeks

all babies develop at different rates so go with your instinct cassi

kieron was a hungry baby and i weaned him at 9 weeks and it hasnt done him any harm he is a strapping 6'2 15 year old now

Im still on the fence, obviously there is 'risks' but these days everything has risks..do you think I should just wait untill he is older or do you think it will help me get him down earlier....

Im going to try a little bit of baby rice before bed tonight...

Cassi another food for thought, I've held out so far on weaning Otis (he's just over 4months now) and he does wake twice in a night for a quick feed. Weight wise he is fine probably a bit on the lean side cause he's BF (mi thinks - present weight is just over 13lbs). Im going to try the Baby Lead Weaning option, which entails skipping the purees and going straight to solids! I've order the Baby safe feeder which allows you to start introducing solids from 4months on in a safe netting so that they don't choke. I'm still waiting to recieve the feeder but the idea is that if Otis is hungry for solids (food) he will be able to feed himself without me having to spoon feed him? There is more info on the BLW on this forum so give us a shout if your interested in finding out more about this :D .

Thats exactly what we've been doing with Harrison as he started waking in the night 2-3 times and was constantly wanting more after his bottle & hes already on 7-8oz (weighs 12lb 14) hungry baby made him really ill so we been giving him 2-3 small spoonfulls of baby rice before bed & he sleeps from 10pm till 7-7:30am now :) I'm gonna wait till he's 4 months to wean him fully.

Go with what you feel is right, your his mum and know whats best for him!

Well we didnt give him the baby rice purely because there seems to be more cons than pro's? Im really on the fence im not sure about BLW either, Im not sure if I want him to have every meal out of a net, I will be buying the safe feeder but I dont think its something I want to do all the time, However I might read up on it and change my mind.
