I just saw on the news they've Jailed Matthew woods for 12 weeks for making sick jokes on his Facebook page.

Whilst I understand they were really sick, and the guy is a cock but surely jail is a bit ridiculous?

It really makes me so angry that thugs, robbers, sex offenders etc get less time in jail than a guy who made a very bad judgement and copied jokes off sickipedia.

Just wondering what other peoples opinions were on this?

I think community service would have been a much better option.

Thoughts?

I agree! I think although some comments and jokes are disgusting, what happened to freedom of speech?

I disagree.
He definitely should be in jail. You can't go around making jokes about peadophilia and think that's perfectly acceptable. There is a Facebook site called 'dead baby jokes' on which a friend of a friend made a sick comment. He is now being hunted by the police (and many of our mutual friends). It shouldn't be tolerated at all. The same as racism and emotional abuse.

What i do agree on is that the justice system is a bit dodgy in places. Yes he should go to jail and 12 weeks should straighten him up. However the others you named should be sentenced more severely than they are.

Im pretty sure if any one of us was directly affected by one of his.comments we would be calling for jail time. I know i certainly would. You can't honestly tell me you think this should be considered under 'freedom of speech?' what if it was said about your child? Racist, aggrivated or abusive comments are not tolerated and that's the way it should be!!

I don't agree with jail as punishment. Getting these kinds of people working in the community for free would be better. Or working, maybe not firectly, but with the family to see what effect it has had and to see its not funny. Jail is a waste of tax payers money in these instances and will ruin their life. There are way more suitable punishmènts for people with a sick sense of humour!

Whose to say it was a sense of humour? Maybe he was serious.

I for one do not want anyone who finds child murder and molestation a joke working in my community. I quite happily send my tax money to his jail sentence.

Hioefully it Will ware off any other 'jokers'

I'm not trying to provoke a debate just giving my opinion. I think people who make sick comments and jokes are disgusting but I also think jail is not the right option. That's just my opinion. I also think you can't send someone to jail for 'might be's'. Thats a very grey area!

Ok you edited your post as I last posted. I agree that working in certain areas would be inappropriate but 'community' is a vast area. There are areas of work that can give these people the wake up call they might need.

I edited it straight away as i missed a point. There's no need to justify you giving an opinion that's what we are all doing and i respect that. Things like this will always cause debate.

Nope, jail shouldn't be for the might be 's however this isn't one of those. You can't tell me that he didn't know he was doing something wrong. His problem was not thinking before he did what he did and not expecting their to be such uproar. People need to realise their actions have consequences and sometimes their going to get bitten on the ass. All i can say to him is bad times, shouldn't have been so stupid and disgusting. I hope he learns his lesson!!

I Defo agree about actions have consequences, people do need to think and have more respect and consideration of others.

i agree with maria. i dont think jail is appropriate for nasty comments and i think the punishment should reflect the crime. im not sure shitty 'jokes' are reason for prison....i also dont think what ifs are appropriate to deem someone unable to work anywhere.....ok i really dont tuink i explained myself too well...basically agree with maria x

saying that i also didnt see the comments either x

jail isnt appropriate for nasty comments but a friend and other of mine fell victim to pm's about dead babies after joining a group for support after losing 4 babies and this should be punished with a jail sentence as he or she was targeting griefing parents with the intent on hurting specific people

there are just some really sick people out there who will never know the pain that these girls are going through and i hope they never do its horrible, these people are doing this to get attention for some sad reason and i for one will not fuel there fire x

i also dont agree jail time is the right punishment, i think he should of been sent to see how these things have affected victims of the said crimes, see how they are coping and how they manage on a day to day basis which would then consequently make him realise his actions have a consequence........

I think people who make sick jokes about babies or torment grieving parents should have to work in some way in that area. Not sure doing what but involved enough that they see the impact of these losses. I'm sure they wouldn't find it do funny then.

OMG what is wrong with these assholes? They must have some form of mental illness, no offence with that but I mean it. There is something wrong with them socially and mentally!

Can't agree with you more. That is what i mean... For someone to be that ill to actually commit these crimes is horrifying but when you really consider what must be wrong with someone to make jokes about those crimes?? Seriously disturbing. If it was my child i would have been hunting him down personally.

The 50 plus vigilantes that turned up at his house thought the same.

Society is horrible at times x

I think that a prison sentence is appropriate here. It sets a precedent that such sick comments (he can say now that they were dark humour) will not be tolerated. A reason behind setting this precedent is because comments such as were made can incite further comments from others and this so on and so forth escalates. The same as if someone makes racist comments - thats classed as racism and subject to prison time.

xx

I agree. It shouldn't be separate from racism or verbal aggression. Not one is less offensive than the other.

I absolutely don't agree with what he said. From what I've read the guy was drunk and copied jokes off sickipedia being goded by his mates. He was well in the wrong.

However, I think maybe there us s better way than jail to make him see the consequences if his actions. We've all seen sick jokes, racists jokes etc... Does that mean every person who passes one on should be jailed? Or that if someone had an opinion that grossly offends another person, when does that become a jailable offence? At what point is a joke a very poor judgement choice, or a malicious attack on others?

I totally understand where you're coming from pudds btw, just wondering others opinions.

At what point is the line drawn? X
