Hi everyone,

This will be our first baby and neither of us have much baby experience so I was wondering what books you would recommend buying and reading before the birth?

Thanks!

I've had the 'Pregnancy Bible' by Anne Deans and also 'Pregnancy and Birth' by Miriam Stoppard (?).

I took the Miriam Stoppard one (bright cerise colour) back as I'd read it in a week and didn't learn much from it - in my opinion it was worth spending the £5 extra on the bigger one (light pink) which was a lot more thorough and has a section for newborns too, a health section at the back for pregnancy and newborns, and a chapter for dads to read.

I have a NCT Baby Care book which my mom got me for after the birth, and also the Haynes Baby Manual I got for my OH. I don't know how good the first one is as I've not had my baby yet but it seems quite thorough. The Haynes Manual - well it's by no means a good one to get if you expect to learn something, but it's cool for Dad's as has the basics and it's a bit of a laugh I suppose.

To be fair though, this forum has been a godsend - I was glad to have the Pregnancy Bible to read through, but for any other questions this place has been by far the most useful tool.

they recommended a couple books like what to expect from 0-2
it covers EVERYTING you can imagine in baby care

i have the rought guide i realy like it as its not too prescriptive

This forum is better than any book but I did have the miriam stoppard book. I did buy the book by someone who cannot be named but I took it back. I cant name her as we were told a while ago not to mention her name because I think she tried to sue a forum before.

You all know who!!!!!

I feel like I'm intruding a bit since I read the forum every day but haven't been brave enough to post until now.

Hi everyone :)

I have only bought 2 books - the Pregnancy Bible by Anne Deans that leckershell has and also this one... (sorry about the amazon image -it was the only one I could find).

Your Baby Month by Month: What to Expect from Birth to 2 Years

It is called "Your Baby Month by Month: What to Expect from Birth to 2 Years" and is by Su Laurent and Peter Reader who are both doctors and parents. I'm really glad I got it and won't be getting others cos it covers EVERYTHING! and I'm feeling much more positive about being a mum now :) I had a look at some of the other books but i don't like being told what to do very much and some of them seemed to think new mums are idiots!
( I might not know anything but I'm not stupid :) )

hello to everyone here - I will try and post a bit more now :)

the new contented little baby book, by Gina ford. im bidding on it on ebay, after a reccomendation from a b.feeding mommy. it looks really good :)

Personally i wouldn't recommend this book, i don't think many peolle would.
Buy ther books read them - but in the end use your instinct NO baby goes by the book, each is an individual and you will learn from you baby, so use the books as a 'guideline' but not page by page.
You will only depress your self if you try to follow everything in all the books.

Nooooo, dont do it. It sets you up for a fall. In theory it sounds great but in reality its awful. My copy was back on ebay before Jess was a fortnight old..
