A friend of mine has just started living with her boyfriend and has asked me what 'basics' she should have in her kitchen.

I cook pretty much everything fresh so I said:

Mixed Herbs
Chilli Powder
Lea and Perrins
Salt and Pepper
Sugar
Tea
Coffee
Tomato Puree
Olive Oil
Milk
Eggs
Cheese
Soured Cream
Bread
Butter
Garlic
Rice
Pasta
Oven Chips
Noodles
Chopped Tomatos
Tinned Fruit
Tuna
Sweetcorn

ETA: Buy meat and veg when you need it rather than risk it going out of date!

 I an't think of anything else?

LOL, I know that in two weeks time she'll drag me to Iceland to but a load of frozen pizzas and burgers!

Potatoes

Boiled, mashed, roast, baked, chips, sauteed.

PASTA!! you can always make something if you have pasta, i loved it when i was a student

veg

thats probably mine

I'm going to be lazy and use your list and edit it :rotfl:

Mixed Herbs
Chilli Powder
Tomato ketchup (OH is obsessed with it)
Heinz mayonnaise
Salt and Pepper
Sugar
Coffee
Olive Oil
Milk
Eggs
Cheese
Bread
Butter/margarine
Garlic
Rice
Pasta
Noodles

I make a lot of soup so I always have lentils and stock cubes around. I have some tins of soup for when I'm feeling lazy. I bake and make bread so I also have a cupboard full of different types of flour and sugar as well as other bits and bobs for baking. I usually buy a couple of weeks worth of meat and freeze it.

Definitely potatoes. I always have vegetables in our fridge. Not because we are super healthy and eat them constantly but they never go to waste because of the guinea pigs

I reeeeeally need to get back into the swing of cooking properly again because I'm only now starting to feel slightly less knackered!

To general items I'd add couscous, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto to the list.

On the spice front, always have salt, pepper, cinnamon, cumin, chilli flakes, paprika, cardamoms, cloves, and turmeric in the store cupboard. And a jar of capers in the fridge. If they count as spice, never sure. And rosemary in the garden.

Always have tin of anchovies in, too. (They're great in a lamb roast. Put slits allover the meat and wedge pieces of anchovies, garlic cloves and rosemary sprigs in. It doesn't tast fishy at all but gives the roast a really nice flavour)

We have a FULL cuboard of herbs/salt/ pepper

Different sauces/dips, for example ceasar dressing

Pasta, potatoes

And general stuff like milk, tea, coffee, cheese, eggs that every house should have
