Seeing as everybody is getting appointments for reassurance scans I've been to my doctors and asked to be referred as I dont know my dates and after my last m/c I want to know that things are going as they should be. So anyway, there are no doctors appointments for 10 days (I know, how shocking is that! I've just joined the surgery and Im dissapointed with it already ) but the receptionist said the midwife is in at 1 o clock today and she'll get her to ring me.

What should I tell the midwife? What if she just tells me to wait til my 12 week mark (even though I have no idea when that is!). All I want is one simple scan so I can relax! Do you think she might refer me to get one?

My doc told me there was no point in having a scan to reassure me until around 12 weeks. She said unfortunately things commonly go wrong until then, so even if I had a good 8 week scan, I still might mc by week 12. She said she understood I was nervous becasue of last mc, but to sit back and relax until then....I'm trying!

I hope the midwife does ring you so you can get it sorted. How long was it from mc to positve pg tast? Just wondering how far gone you could be?

I would make a big point of saying you are really unsure of dates and really push for an early scan. They nearly didn't give me one as i said i wanted an early one due to my mc in July. But as i had only had one AF since mc they couldn't be sure of dates so i blagged it.

Let us know what midwife says.

I had a m/c in september then fell pregnant again straight afterwards so I could be anywhere from 5 weeks to 8 weeks, I honestly dont know!

just say to her that you are very uncertain of your dates and is it possible to be referred for a dating scan and hopefully she can help you out. i had to ask my gp to refer me and she was quite happy to help. good luck

Yeah see because thats such a big difference in weeks you should get an early scan.

I mean it helps to know how far gone you are.

If you think you are 5 but turned out to be 8 you would miss your next scan by 3 weeks!

And if you are having any sort of tests done done they have to be done at certain stages in your pg?

So i would tell the midwife you really needto know how far gone you are. i mean you won't even know when you've hit the end of the 1st trimester and are in a 'safer' part of your pg.

That's not very reassuring is it, what your doc said?

If you see a heartbeat at the the scan after 6/7 weeks, then the chance of m/c goes down considerably. So if you have a good 8 week scan the chances of having a m/c after that isn't as likely as if you haven't had a scan and known if there was a heartbeat there or not. Yes it would still happen if it was going to, but seeing a heartbeat on a scan at 6/7 and 9 weeks with this pregnancy after all the bleeding and cramps I've had was very very reasuring.

I don't blame you girls for wanting early scans

Yeah I told my doc I didnt know my dayes because of MC previously, he said straight away that he would book me for an early scan. I heard nothing. Contacted the hospital direct and they said they dont have the staff or money to do early scans unless their is a problem, so would just do one at rouhly 12 weeks. So I got one at another hospital. Im now nearly 12weeks and still heard nothing from the other hospital. Luckily when I saw my midwife the other week I chaned hospitals, but as a result of everything ahppening quite late, I dont have a 12week scan appointment through yet.

That really sucks.

I don't get how they are so reluctant to gove early scans if you have had a previous mc, which to me makes sense! But if you mention your dates are unsure then they change there minds. Thats whats happened with me anyways.

I mean surely if someone is having a mc the earlier they find out the better all round.

It's terrible really.

I thought I wasn't going to get a scan for ages but letter arrived this morning and I have appt. for next Tuesday!

Kirsty I do think you should push for an early scan cos as sami says the likelihood of a mc after seeing a heartbeat reduces considerably. But you will have to wait until you're at least six weeks cos they wont be able to see anything and it'll be a waste of time. I was threathening m/c when on holiday in America and they scanned me at about 5 weeks but could only see the sac said it was way to early to see a heartbeat that only appears after the six week mark and with some not until you're at least 7 weeks.

So my suggestion is to book an apt with your Dr for 10days and insist on a scan as soon as possible by then you will def have passed the six week mark and hopefully when they scan you you'll see a heartbeat. When I returned from America I say my dr and got a scan for just 2 days later so it is possilbe to get them urgenly.
