I weaned Sophie at 12 weeks she was soo rdy for it??

Do u just start to wean at 4 months or wait till they are rdy??

The HV are recommending waiting until 6months. Though I have started Ellie at 4months. TBH I think I was keeping her waiting. She adores the baby rice - she even picked up the bowel we had finished with and started to lick it out the other day! I tried her with a bit of carrot the other day but she wasn't keen, so I am going back to baby rice for the next few days and then I am going to try her on some sweet potato.

haha bless her!! Ellis doesnt like carrott either.

I started to wean at 18 weeks cos i was excited!! haha but the HV shouted at me as its 6 months now.

They say not to wean before 17 weeks as there bellys can not digest properly xxxx

Which is why I am going to "forget" to mention it when I take her to be weighed next week. That will probably be the llast time I see them as I go back to work on the 8th Jan.

yeah thats what the literature says. 3-4 months is prime growth spurt age so what some believe are signs that baby is ready fopr weaning is more the fact they are going through a growth spurt.

Whilst the recommendation is 6 months, the minimum age that should be advised by health workers is 17 weeks. There are a number of reasons for this including

1. Baby's intestines need to mature. The intestines are the body's filtering system, screening out potentially harmful substances and letting in healthy nutrients. In the early months, this filtering system is immature. Between four and seven months a baby's intestinal lining goes through a developmental growth spurt called closure, meaning the intestinal lining becomes more selective about what to let through, the intestines are more mature and able to filter out more of the offending allergens. This is why it's particularly important to delay solids if there is a family history of food allergy, and especially to delay the introduction of foods to which other family members are allergic. The danger of weaning before 4 months is that the baby may become overweight, develop food allergies or suffer from indigestion. Weaning too early can also cause kidney damage.

2. Young babies have a tongue-thrust reflex . In the first four months the tongue thrust reflex protects the infant against choking. When any unusual substance is placed on the tongue, it automatically protrudes outward rather than back. Between four and six months this reflex gradually diminishes, giving the glob of cereal a fighting chance of making it from the tongue to the tummy. Not only is the mouth-end of baby's digestive tract not ready for early solids, neither is the lower end.

3. Baby's swallowing mechanism is immature. Another reason not to rush solids is that the tongue and the swallowing mechanisms may not yet be ready to work together. Give a spoonful of food to an infant less than four months, and she will move it around randomly in her mouth, pushing some of it back into the pharynx where it is swallowed, some of it into the large spaces between the cheeks and gums, and some forward between the lips and out onto her chin. Between four and six months of age, most infants develop the ability to move the food from the front of the mouth to the back instead of letting it wallow around in the mouth and get spit out. Prior to four months of age, a baby's swallowing mechanism is designed to work with sucking, but not with chewing.

Also baby should be getting their nutrients from their milk, which is more calorific then solids.

My HV said that they can start to be weaned as soon as their weight starts to level off instead of increasing, Alfies is starting to do that now and she said another couple of weeks he'll be ready, mind you my HV also said it was ok for me to put baby rice in his bottle which i did and it never harmed him but then i heard it was quite bad for him ... It was only a teeny tiny bit not like a scoop or anything, in fact it was just about quarter of a teaspoon, he was really happy and content but stopped when i heard it wasnt good for him, hes not as content at feeds now but its just a few weeks away, hes 13 weeks this sat

Thanks for that Beanie, it worries me that the HV let me wean Sophie at 12 weeks when u read that!! but she was fine and still is

well i weaned all mine between the ages of 14 and 16 weeks and they are all fine.
I bet ourmothers weaned us lot at a similar age too and their mothers them.

With a ll the new regulations etc its a wonder the human race has ever survived at all

my mum weaned me at 8 wks    i was sleeping through night 8 till 8 but taking 6 9 oz bottles in between, and when she did put me on food i was on the milupa boxes and id go through a box a day ... and i am ok, just how greedy was i?

am sure the majority of people are, I was weaned early but sadly developed coelic disease . recommendations change as research gets better, the guidelines are not there because they want to make mums lives more difficult.
