Hi all,

We're weaning Jack at the mo - he's nearly six months old. He has 5 7oz bottles a day but now at tea time we're giving him a little bit of baby food and a small baby pudding followed by a smaller bottle. I really have no idea how bottles measure up against solid foods. Eventually I know that the idea is to replace bottles with solids altogether, but at this early stage does anyone know how I'm supposed to supplement the food with the bottle - as in what volume? Should he still be having a bottle with his solids? Or should I continue making a smaller one to go with it? If so how much does his milk need to be reduced by?

Hope I'm making sense - anyone got any advice or know where I can find out. xx

Just make the normal amount he used to have take note of how much he drinks after eating then you can reduce it so less waste they wean themselves in a sense but its said to offer milk after food as a drink at least to start with then introduce water or juice when he eats more of his meals x

Milk should still be his main source of nutrition up to a year, so make up his normal amounts. He may reduce it naturally himself. X

On my iPhone - so cant see tickers :(

I gave the same amount of milk and waited for her to reduce it herself. I used to do a small milk feed before breakfast, give breakfast and then finish the bottle and all the rest of the time I just used to give her food then the bottle. If she was really hungry I gave her a small amount of the bottle first to satisfy her hunger a little bit so that we didn't end up having a tantrum when the solids weren't filling her as quickly as the milk would and she was getting angry. X

Oh and my tip is dont think too much into it all and just go with what you feel. I had a few moments where I thought am I doing this right and then realised there is no right or wrong way.

We have now got to the stage where we only have milk at set times of the day (3 bottles in total now) and have incorporated juice into her diet that she has along with breakfast, lunch and tea.

He will eat what he wants but, as others have said, the milk is the important thing as it is giving most of the nutrition at that point.

Make sure you still give the right amount of milk and it doent really matter how much solids he eats.

I am wondering about this, have been waiting for the HV to ring me back for 3 days about it cause I have some questions! My LO has naturally reduced her milk now she is on 3 meals a day. She used to take 7oz bottles but now has more like 5 oz. How did other people get their LO to accept water? E looks like I've poisoned her when she gets it!

my lo will happily drink water if its from a proper cup or glass, but only wants juice in her sippy cup lol. she has reduced bottles of milk to 0 and now just bf's so i add formula to her breakfast and get some into her at bedtime when she wants comfort feed just to make sure shes getting as much milk as possible but i dont stress about it, she has 3 meals and the odd snack if she wants more food. generally when im trying to eat something lol
