..what is the benefits, have you had one before. I've not considered it but only because i know nothing about it so some info would be great??

xx

This is a big no no for me, I am petrified of water and panic if my bath's too deep. I can see though that it would be less stressful for baby, coming from warm water out into warm water xxxxxxx

hmm, i think i should do some research. i've not considered it at all but then my OH just emailed me out of the blue asking whether i've thought about it. x

I have just started thinking about opting for it......only to find out my hospital doesnt have a birthing pool!

OK well i just done a quick read up on babycentre and it seems the negative side is that you may have bowel movement in the water and then its obviously in there with you until the midwife gets it out...i think that alone has put me off!

Just like our local swimming pool then lmao xxxxxxxxx

I can see why something like that would put you off, but actually if you do have a poo in the birthing pool I tend to find that it is actually more discreet than being out of the pool. Midwives are generally very good at making things like that discreet and not as obvious. If I have a woman in the pool who is having a bowel movement then I will always remove it as quickly as possible.

As a midwife, the benefits of having a water birth are great! It is complete personal choice, and if you don't like water then chances are you won't like the pool, but most women find as soon as you get into the pool the water pressure makes the contractions less intense, and women tend to cope better in warm water. It is also a fantastic way for your baby to be born. Babies tend to be a lot calmer, and breastfeed better if they are born into water, and tend not to cry.

Obviously it is different for everyone, but I always try and recommend that you try the birthing pool whilst in labour, if you don't like it, you can get out. I have also had women who love to use it as pain relief in labour but do not want to deliver in the pool and that is great too! It is another form of natural pain relief and it really works!

I am hoping to have the use of a pool when I have my LO in March! I hope this helped a bit xxx

I can see that the feeling of weightlessness would be amazing, especially for women who have bone problems or something else that has made the weight of later pregnancy unbearable

Great thread - I've always thought I'd like to do it this way, but it's not something I have researched yet.

It definitely is each to their own though babybrain! If you don't like water, and a lot of people don't, then it is understandable that you would want to steer clear of it!! xxx

i dont even know if my hospial offers it but it is a great, modern hospital in central london so i'd be suprised if they don't :eh:

This is a great thread. I had decided that i didnt want a waterbirth or even to try the birthing pool as a method of pain relief, but reading this has made me think about it a bit more, especially the bit about baby being calmer and more willing to bf. I will need to read up a bit more now.

yeah from what i read online the baby is much calmer which is lovely  xx

I know you can hire birthing pools but do hospitals allow you to bring your own?

Is it chelse and westminster? Im sure they will. Do ur hospital do tours? Im looking into doing one at mine as they hold them the same day each week, just need to take a day off with OH as its at 3pm so cant get to london to work a half day and be back on time, and OH job dont allow half days.

I'd love a water birth, but our hospital doesn't have a birthing pool :( which surprises me because it's a brand new hospital and normally has great facilities x
