Hi everyone.

I am new to this forum so hope you don't mind me posting. I have been really worried lately and was looking for a place to find some advise.

Basically I am 12 weeks pregnant with my first child. Me and husband had been trying for about a year and after seeing a fertility specialist where they told us we would not be able to conceive naturally ( or it would be highly unlikely ) since I don't ovulate every month ( no idea when I do ) have a lot of fibroids that needs to be removed and my husband has low sperm count and 0% morphology. You can undertstand my chock when I found out I got pregnant naturally!!

We are of course over the moon and so happy we dont have to go through fertility treatments since I understand how hard this can be ( have many friends struggling to get pregnant ). Its only one thing that worries me a lot. Since I was told its basically impossible for me to get pregnant I have been living my life with no attention to my cycles, ovulation etc until we would have treatments. When I must have been 4 weeks pregnant I went on a week long girls party week/Hen due. This meant alcohol every day and lots of it. I am talking lots of wine, tequila shots and cocktails every day ( my friends like a good party ) and I got very drunk most days. This meant I would have been drinking from 4 weeks up until 5 weeks pregnant and a lot every day. A couple of weeks after I came back ( having had some wine at dinner from time to time ) I started to feel sick. Took a pregnancy test and positive!

Of courser I have not touched a drop of alcohol since and wouldn't dream of it but what harm can I have done drinking at 4-6 weeks and so much. I rarely drink that much but it was my best friend getting married and a one off holiday so I just went for it.

So upset about this. Talking to GP and they said nothing I can do about it now which I am not sure is helping that much. Has anyone been in the same situation?

Thanks! xx

Hi sunseeker!

Firstly, congratulations!! I’m so happy for you! I’m also in a similar situation - my partner was told he would never conceive naturally (tried for 6+ years with a different partner), were in a very new relationship so it came as a complete shock to the both of us, especially as I previously had PCOS (I had a MC last year and that has somehow sorted out my hormones and there’s now no visible Cysts. I’m not around 6 weeks ish - although I have no idea because I wasn’t monitoring my periods or conception dates like you!)

Like you, I was going about my life as normal, although I haven’t been on a hen do, I was enjoying a glass of prosecco or 3 until I found out! You’ve stopped now so that’s all the matters.

Baby’s are born addicted to morphine, and mothers who have been on drugs / alcohol all the way through the pregnancy so I wouldn’t worry too much! Last year I was very poorly with a MC and in hospital, I made a friend in the same ward, she had lupus and her baby was born addicted to morphine and other pain killers but the benefits outweighed the risks as she couldn’t properly carry the baby without pain meds, steroids etc. The baby is now 8 years old, happy and healthy! Obviously it wasn’t ideal but sometimes these things can’t be helped.

Good luck :) xxx

Didn't want to read and run. I've no experience with this. Obviously it can harm baby but so many women who don't know they're pregnant for months drink non stop and their baby is fine. Could you maybe get a private scan to give yourself some peace of mind?

Congratulations sun seeker!

From what I understand the baby/embryo is completely separate from your circulation until the placenta develops, and gets all it's nourishment from your endometrium/womb lining. So I think it's unlikely that the alcohol even got to your baby at that stage. Don't worry at all!

As for as I know, what you eat/drink doesn't reach the baby until you develop a placenta. Before then, the baby gets all of its nutrients from the yolk sac. I think it's because many women don't know they're pregnant straight away, so our bodies have developed a way to protect the baby until it's a bit more obvious that it exists :) I don't think you could've done any harm to the baby that early on.

Thanks! Not sure a scan would pick anything up though or perhaps I am wrong? x

Thanks everyone, appreciate all your replies. I know what's done is done but cant stop blaming myself.. Its so typical because normally I am trying to be very healthy so this was a one off!

I am not very worried about the amount I drank when I came back from the Hen due ( Week 5-6 or so ) since it was only a couple of glasses of wine now and then for dinner. Its only the huge amount I drank when I must have been 4-5 weeks!!

xx

With my youngest i was not trying to get pregnant and in fact i was on the pill. Although it wasnt a full week of drinking the weekend i found out i was pregnant i drank alot the friday night i was at a girls night out drinking cocktails and shots and on the Sat i got a new tattoo and then had a girls night in with my best friend where we drank at least 5 bottles of wine while putting the world to rights. I then found out on the monday i was pregnant.
My daughter is now nearly 7 and is a amazing little girl with no issues at all.
Im sure the week away would have had no effect and the fact that you have not drank since you found out is the important bit

The baby isn't connected to you really until 7-8 weeks.
I drank alot before I found out I was pregnant with this one as it was very unexpected as id only just had my daughter.
Personally I wouldn't be worried, there are people addicted to alcohol and drugs that have babies all the time and most are completely fine after the withdrawal. As long as your not going out drinking every day throughout your pregnancy there's nothing to be worried about.

Congratulations lovely!!! Honestly, the month I conceived we decided to have a break from TTC and just relax it. We went out for Halloween, let our hair down and had a really crazy party weekend. The day after I checked my cycle app on the off chance and realised I was 3 days late for AF. I tested that morning (hungover) and got my BFP. I was devastated tbh, I was so so upset I had been so drunk the night before.

I'm now 19 weeks and that weekend has never affected the baby or my pregnancy. So many people get drunk without realising they are pregnant, I was so ashamed for ages but it is nothing to be ashamed about - it is life and you didn't realise you were pregnant so don't panic :)

Congratulations and here's to a happy pregnancy xx
