Evie has had an awful cold and cough.

It started about 10 days ago and the doc said she had a sore throat, inflamed ears etc and just to keep going with the calpol. The cough got worse over the weekend and yesterday she started to lose her voice, so today we've been back to the doctors and he's prescribed her an inhaler :( :( :( :(

I'm totally confused because he said that her chest/lungs were clear and open when he listened to them but he'd like to put her on ventolin because she must have some irritation there.

Has anyone else been prescribed ventolin for a baby's cough???

she's really poorly bless her

Thats an irritated airway. Ventolin will ease it. Its nothing to do with the lungs as such. If they are clear thats fine :)

Its often given for a viral infection that causes breathing problems. Its not all to do with the lungs, hence the Ventolin. It happens to me sometimes also. I am asthmatic and take my inhalers but sometimes I get a viral infection (cough/cold) and it makes my asthma worse so I have to up my dosage. Its all in my airway and the inhaler helps ease the wheezing and the tightness feeling that the infection causes. It does not mean she is asthmatic or will need to be on it long term, just that while she has this cough and cold she needs to take it to ease things.

People often mistake breathing problems as being to do with the lungs but forget the airway part. Lots of children suffer this kind of thing when stuck with a nasty cough or cold and once the cold is gone, their breathing returns to normal again.

Angel had the same 2 weeks ago! Worked wonders! She was first coughing so hard she was gasping for breath! I saw 2 doctors as i wasn't happy with the first diagnosis that there was nothing wrong with her!

I was given the option of leaving her to get over it or try the inhaler. I took it to give it a go. Within days she was so much better!

Thanks girls... We've used it twice so far today... the cough is still the same but I'm not expecting it to work immediately.

I've got exactly the same cough and I'm tempted to have a squirt myself! :D
