Can anyone offer any advice? As I have been self employed for 4 years I have had to apply for maternity allowance. I found out on Friday that my claim has not been processed due no 'no National insurance class 2 contributions made during test period' which I expected as I knew I owed them money but hadn't received a bill to pay. I contacted hmrc and asked them to send me one but it only covers up to 6th april 2013 and my test period is between march 2013 and june 2013 which I haven't completed a return for yet. Does this mean I have to complete a tax return for last year before I will recieve my mat allowance? Am due in just over 4 weeks and due to finish work in a fortnight!!

Aaarrgghh

You will need to contact the national insurance office as your class 2 is what you should be paying by direct debit. You pay your class 4 national insurance contributions with your tax return which is based on your self employed profit. If you haven't already contact the national insurance office (I suspect it was the tax office not national insurance office you have rang apologies in advance if I am incorrect.) Here is the link to the website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/check-record.htm. You can ring them on phone the national insurance class 2 helpline on 0300 200 3505. I hope this helps and if you have any more questions let me know and I will try and help. Vicky x
