Hi there

Me and my partner have been trying to conceive for 5 months now. Got my implant out June and it took a good2/3 months for my cycle to get back on track.

I just want some honest advice on our chances of conceiving if my bmi is over 40? We are on our honeymoon just now but after that I do plan on losing weight. However I have stones to go before my bmi is even under 40 never mind 30.

Any experiences getting pregnant with a high bmi good or bad would be appreciated!

Xx

I think my BMI was 45 at one point. It depends a lot on your age. The older you get the more of a deal it is. Also there can be issues during pregnancy if you have a high BMI. I was told I needed to get it down to 30 before they would consider me for fertility treatment. I got it down to 25 with a low carb diet in the end.

It's worth getting the weight down a bit so that you have less chance of complications during pregnancy.

Just to echo what Sunflower1 said, it’s best to try and reduce weight in order to reduce the chances of complications later on. However, losing weight too quickly can be associated with problems, so make sure you’re doing it slowly and in a healthy way. If you find it difficult on your own, have a chat to your GP and they’ll be able to suggest the best way forward.

Hope you’re having a lovely honeymoon!

Im 25 so should have time on my side to get weight down over the next year or so. I guess if I do get pregnant within that time its a bonus.

That's a good idea about going to the gp. I was referred for a weight loss clinic before but chickened out. Guess I can't have any better motivation then helping us to conceive!

Thanks for the above comments :)

Sometimes you need a push, and if this is it for you then fab ☺️ Might be a good idea to see if the GP will refer you again, particularly if that option is available in your area.

Good luck, and hope it works out for you!

I echo what everyone else has said. Being overweight makes it very hard for some women to conceive but some women will still conceive fairly easily. It definitely makes pregnancy riskier and harder though. Lots more things can go wrong for you and for baby so definitely lose as much as possible before you conceive :)
