I have 2 hermanns tortoises and love them to bits, they are sooo funny!
Mine have an indoor enclosure with heat lamp for over the winter and in the summer they have an outdoor enclosure attached to the greenhouse so they can go out to feed and bask in the sunshine then go into the greenhouse at night and be safe.
Mine are fed on weeds and plants growing in their enclosure, they help themselves and over the winter, I pick weeds for them and pad it out with salad leaves.
I think they can be as easy or as complicated as you make them. Once you have the set up right, it's easy x
We have a horse field tortoise which requires heat. If space is an issue then have a non hibernating tortoise such as a red foot. In the winter, all tortoises do require heat as it is too cold and will most likely need a UV too to help them digest food as they are reptiles. You must also make sure they aren't over fed otherwise they stretch their shell and should only be in garden if it is secure away from other animals and the weather is hot.
If he likes unusual animals I suggest getting an axolotl. They are sooooooo easy to look after. They are amphibious and their skin is so delicate so he won't be able to hold it but all they need is a tank with water (room temp and just buy the tesco value bottled still water) and then they eat a salmon pellet a day (adults) for growing babies they can have bloodworms which you can buy frozen or daphnea depending on size. Look into them though if you want a low maintainance pet lol.
I had a pet tortoise growing up called Snoopy, some barsteward stole him I'd love to get another one one day. My aunt used to have one called Jeremy They're brilliant!
