I didn't want to hijack Chloe's thread so I thought I'd start a new one.
SausageRoll is 5 weeks old now and feeding hasn't improved in the last few weeks. He feeds well and is gaining weight perfectly but I still have pain throughout all his feeds. I've taken all the feeding support I can and an always told I'm doing it right, his latch is great and that it shouldn't hurt beyond the let down.
Tongue tie came up in Chloe's thread as a cause of pain. I was told SR had tongue tie shortly after he was born but that it wasn't a problem as he was feeding fine so I pretty much forgot about it.
I've seen someone today who says his tongue tie is quite extreme and very tight. She said when he sucks his tongue isn't covering his lower gum the way it should so he's using his jaw and his lips to bring the milk down not his tongue.
She asked if my nipples feel bruised and had a look - they are bruised, quite visibly. I didn't realise this was unusual until she expressed shock. She said people often describe them as feeling bruised but that she's never seen clear bruises on them before from feeding. She was impressed I've carried on so long.
We discussed options and the fact that such tight tt may impact his speech when he's older. We made the decision to get the cut. I'm cross it was brushed off in the first place and that this could have been fixed earlier and sorted the pain, but grateful that it had been sorted now.
He's a bit out of sorts tonight and I've been told I might not feel an improvement for a while because of how damaged my nips are. It was so hard to do something that hurt my boy but I hope it's for the best...
