Anyone got any tried and tested ways of soothing a toddler's sore throat? Having an awful day of it with my daughter. She's screaming when she's trying to eat and ending up in tears. After even Petit Filous wouldn't go down without crying, I've resorted to milk, which she is now drinking - thank goodness. I've just given some nurofen. Anything else I can do to help?? I feel completely helpless at the moment, she seems in so much pain.

Some of the baby cough medicines can be good for soothing a sore throat, other than that you're doing all I would suggest!

It's horrible. My son is very prone to sore throats and it gets to a point where only antibiotics work. My GP kept encouraging Calpol but after 3 weeks it was just getting ridiculous and obviously wasn't working so got antibiotics which worked within a couple of days. My son is just recovering from another sore throat and thankfully the GP went straight to antibiotics this time.

Plenty of drink, yogurt and even ice cream. Let her have whatever she is willing to eat as she is bound to be uncomfortable. My son just lived off toast for the past few days, poor little thing.

I was going to suggest ice-cream or an ice lolly.

Ice cream is a great one and cold custard pots straight out the fridge. Because it's thicker it'll act like a coating. Poor wee thing x

Anything dry that's scratchy! Toast is a good one

Thanks for your suggestions. I ended up phoning the GP as her tongue came out in a load of little blisters, but apparently it's "just" viral. She's kind of asleep now - keeps waking crying and we've just given Calpol. Never known her in so much pain.

Urgh, I heard the same thing from my GP A LOT. Go back tomorrow if there is no improvement. I hate having a sore throat and I am 28. Maybe see another GP?

Toast obviously is not ideal and wouldn't have thought it help, but my son has been very ill lately and my point was more - 'give the child what they will eat', for my son it was toast as he also had an upset tummy. My advice for a sore throat as I stated in my post was yogurt, ice cream and fluids.

They wouldn't even see her - I had a triage nurse on the phone who told me it's viral. She had a reasonable night considering (couple of cries, but mostly sleep) and although doesn't fancy eating anything has drunk a load of milk, so that's something. Yes, I think going with whatever she will eat is definitely the way to go. As long as she stays hydrated.

As long as she is drinking then she'll be ok without eating much.

We have a poorky boy (cough and cold nothing too serious) and he is living on toast and biscuits lol. Its all he wants to eat. Better than nowt although I do think he is trying his luck a bit now.

Toast is brill for a sore throat. The scratchy feeling gives you some relief. Little one obviously might be hesitant to eat it mind you but worth a shot. After you have your tonsils removed that's what they advise you to eat :D

Seriously?! I apologise, I thought you were taking the rip

Olly is the same at the minute - it doesnt seem to bother him through the day but come night time he is coughing all night, We were up every hour last night. He has got phlegm on this chest and cannot get it up. Poor babies

It's awful, isn't it? Daniel's had pretty much non-stop colds since September and an almost continual cough. He coughs most in the evening and just as we put him down for bed. Produces loads of phlegm! Awful. Eleanor's been better today in that she hasn't been screaming. She's rested heaps, which amazed me as usually she's resistant to naps. Just having milk, homemade bran muffins and tiny bits of jelly, but at least she's having something.

Our little guy has a cough and heavy cold. It's terrible as there's not much you can do. His starts as soon as he goes in his cot to sleep too bless him.

Last night when I put him down for the second time I laid him down in his front (he's 10months and moves to his front in the night anyway)....nowhere near as much coughing and he settled better. By coincidence today someone told me that laying them on their front helps as it compresses the chest or something. She was told to do so with her now 10yr old when he was a bubba. Worth trying?
